The Apostate chest bug or hidden ES modifier?

I'm playing a life stacker and I double corrupted an Apostate that had the quality give max hp instead of defence. When I swapped my current Apostate I somehow lost 800+ life even though I should have gained a bit, +10 from quality and +3 from the higher strength roll.
