XP Penalties....why?

I've been playing since the games release and so far I've enjoyed the game for the most part. Although I haven't completely agreed with some of the changes made, overall I've had fun with the content and build crafting. The one thing I still can't wrap my head around and drives me up the wall are the xp penalties when dying. Why is this even a thing? It serves absolutely no purpose other than to piss off the player base and gatekeep level 100. Not sure why GGG cares so much about making it as hard as possible to max level. As if going from 97, 98 to 100 is somehow going to break the game and make things so much easier for us. It makes no sense. I like most people out there have been stuck at 97 98 for months trying to get to 100. Omens only get you so far. Just get rid of it already. God forbid we have people enjoying the accomplishment of getting a character to level 100.

Because losing XP is the most fun thing in the game! And if you don't agree, you just want the game to play itself.

The only way for it to be better is if XP loss applied to gems, too! And further more, if it could make you (and your gems) lose levels!

There are those who would claim this is an argument against what you are advocating for...

If it is unnecessary, why do you care? Why is it important that the game be changed to hand this to you? If level 100 doesn't give appreciable power, it's just a status symbol. Shouldn't those be strove for? The instant everyone is level 100 on every character, it ceases to mean anything. You won't feel better about finally having something when literally every other person has that same thing.

I reject the emotional premise of your post. You're asking why you can't have something - while, in reality, you want to take something away from others. As you've said; the remaining few levels are irrelevant from a power point of view. So you're asking that this quirky optional challenge that some people enjoy specifically aiming for be taken away from them. And in the process you've failed to offer a single example of why this would make the game better for anyone.

Why stop there? I'm sure there are achievements you haven't unlocked; MTX you haven't purchased; unique items you haven't obtained. Shall we take all of those out of the game, too?

I suspect you'll be quick to argue that, no - those are different. But I am interested in what argument you will offer - if any, which tbh I'm sceptical of - to substantiate that difference.

tl;dr: Want bragging rights? Earn them.
