Memory tears
What's the trick to getting memory tears to show up?

Have you gotten to and completed the quest chain for the season?
The quest chain starts when you find Eagon in your first t14 map (generally; it's possible there's some other way to spawn him, but I don't know it). He will give you a tear that leads to the first boss. After you beat it, he will show up again and you get a tear that leads to the 2nd boss. And then once more with the 3rd boss. After you've beaten the quest version of all 3 bosses, *then* you can unlock tears in the normal way. They have a low chance to appear in maps you run. I don't know if there's a minimum, but they can appear as low as white maps once they're unlocked. Just runs lots of maps quickly. There are some nodes at the top of the atlas tree that give increased chance, but it's a pretty small effect, and only works in t16s (according to the text... but there are rumors that it's bugged, and either works everywhere or not at all). Note that tears can only appear in maps that are actually on the atlas, so you won't find them in t17s, etc. Last edited by QQPQ#9136 on Jul 28, 2025, 7:47:28 PM

" Yup, I've done all that just wandering if there's any tricks to getting them to show up more frequently. |

" Just run maps fast. There are some conspiracy theories that maybe if your map has too many mechanics, it might "eat" the tear (the same way not every tileset can spawn the maximum number of abysses or legions, etc), but I haven't seen any definitive testing on that. If you use a map where you can quickly "view" the whole map (you don't need to physically see the tear, it has a pretty big/obvious minimap icon if you get within a certain distance of it), then you don't even have to actually clear the map. Mesa is a good example of this. If you're playing Standard rather than Mercenaries, Coves would be another example of a good layout for this. It's possible that Sepulchre might be good, because it usually forces mechanics into the first section of the map (which is fairly small), but I don't know if anyone has actually tested whether this applies to tears or not. | |
" Anecdotally, I ran over 50 maps post-quest chain in the recent event and found zero tears. Then I unspecced chance to spawn Niko on my atlas tree, which was previously specced to 100%, and found all three tears within the next 20 maps. Of course, this isn't definitive proof, but based on all the bug reports about it, there could be something weird going on. The reported frequency is ~7% with the nodes allocated to increase chance, so roughly 1 in 15 maps. Even with a bad luck streak, it shouldn't be to that hard to find. |
