Can someone tell me what killed me?

I watched the race with ben the other day and got inspired to try HC SSF. Never played hardcore nor ssf before, so i just copied his build, repeated everything he does from the vod. I'm also kinda new to poe, 120 hrs according to steam.
I was level 59 or so, had like 2700 hp, maybe like 3k armor, 80/78/78 resists or smth like that, but -30 chaos res, he also had -30 at this level. I had 21 fortify from the passive tree as well. So im just doing quests, the den in act 7. There was a frozen bear like those that drop essences and u gotta click 3 times to unfreeze it. No other mobs around. I either killed the bear or got it very low, dont remember, and then of all a sudden i instantly die from full hp. I don't think there were any circles on the ground but my memory is a bit hazy. Can anyone guess what happened? I was definitely not under 80% hp, i remember the red globe was either full or nearly full, that one im sure of. This was a few days ago. Felt like ggg just decided they dont want me to play anymore. I have absolutely no idea what happened. One moment im all good and the next i saw a resurrect in town button. I feel scammed. You feel like GGG singled you out? It doesn't work like that.
and I doubt Ben would even of clicked that essence monster. and Ben is extremely skilled at POE, It's not easy to replicate his playstyle even if you copy his build to the T. monster might've been something with Beserking mod where it gets stronger as its hp gets lower. -Official Forum Dweller- -I started the hoho comment- -Exploit Early - Exploit Often- -You think Poe2 is good? Essence can be pretty dangerous. That's pretty OP stats for that stage of the game, I'm surprised you died, don't know what it would be, some essence do have chaos mods. Knowing what is dangerous and where to stand is a bit of a skill beyond the build itself.
That's HC though, hard to say without a recording. Can't say i've died with those stats in the campaign, but I got a surprising one shot off a rare mob from a unique strongbox in act 4 as well during the event, which I think was crit mods. Sometimes it happens. Are you using a guard skill? May not of helped if it was a full one shot, but worth having anyway. I don't know if he use one, but molten shell/cwdt would probably be good will that armor (Actually steel skin might be better at that point, 10% armour would be less and not that helpful 300 v 800 guard, IC might even be better than 300). "May have been 'Crystalline' mod. See: https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Monster_modifiers Any rare monster can have that, its not something specific to Essences. If you are not tuned to notice this it can be easy to miss. Even if tuned you can still miss it, especially if there is lots going on. Its one of the reasons for getting chaos resist in HC. No wonder it's lost, it's in the middle of the jungle!

Yeah that's a supper dangerous mod for melee builds without chaos res if you don't know about it. I've died to it before. It builds up if you hit the mob a lot, especially on a mob that you might be having difficulty with. If you know about it, it is pretty easy to avoid, when you notice it stacking. Guard skill would help I think because I think the crystals hit individually, but the build up could get you through the guard as well if there was a lot stacked up and with negative chaos res.
Here's a video of Mr. Llama dyeing to that mod. I don't agree that on death mechanics are bad for the game, but you can see the mechanic at 1:20 and it is dangerous. I think there is a good chance that Zrevnur has picked it, it is certainly a mod that would be dangerous to your build and your description of the encounter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dazKszOx0dQ Through the campaign it is relatively easy to know where the chaos damage is dangerous, though without knowing this, you might be better off having it in the positive.
