I tried giving PoE2 a chance

A lot of people describe it as the "tutorial to PoE1", but for some reason it feels that PoE2 has the difficulty dialed up all the way to 1000.

People said that my build was "above average" for my stage of the game and yet I still kept constantly and endlessly dying to an early-game boss.

This never happened in PoE1, if I kept dying to a boss, there was always an improvement to my build I could make to easily get rid of the boss.

Why did GGG make the sequel so punishing? Do they really want PoE to become Dark Souls or something?

It's highly depends what are you playing. LA with Rod just delete everything on the screen.

PoE 2's early game is absolutely horrid. And this is entirely because of the decision to gate skills behind weapons + high level. Warrior especially barely has any builds before reaching later acts and even then they are very similar to each other.

PoE 2 is designed to combo with skills, the issue is that 80% of the starting skills don't synergise in any way

Take Ranger for example. Lightning Rod and Lightning Arrow synergise together, while Poison burst arrow literally does nothing.

You have to imagine it is so bad designed that you better run auto attack on Warrior and Mercenary when you start fresh, because auto attack is stronger than your skill of choice lmao.
Another issue with the Poe2 skill gem system is the gating and handholding. Thou shalt only get this uncut skill spirit or support gem at the designated time in the designated place in the campaign! This design choice is pretty stupid.

In theory they wanted POE 2 to be slower, with more methodical and meaningful game-play; with the added difficulty as a side effect . In practice, this only works in acts 1 and 2, after that it tries to turn into POE 1, but only when the enemies are concerned. So by endgame you have POE 1 enemies and a sluggish character that can only roll around like a Dark Souls meme char.

Personally, the campaign and the Bosses are the only good things about POE 2, everything else is just either incompetent design or deliberate destruction of a potentially good game.
Imagine if the average trash (non-boss) fight from a Dark Souls game involved 50-100 enemies each moving at 10x the speed that they do in that game right now, and your character's relative performance was unchanged. How many fans do you think said game would have? very few

POE2 doesn't know what it wants to be. As it stands now it is both far away from Dark Souls and POE1.

But I literally played exactly that build. I was still constantly getting deleted by most of the bosses.

Watch fubgun videos from last league start. You will delete every boss but you have to set up rods properly or just watch vod and learn. Overall it's good to not kill them instant to actually learn them.

Just don't attack, try avoid all moves.

This league I made 5 or 6 characters just to see how it plays now, zero optimization just what's fun to use in the beginning, tree just wing it for what kinda fits skill, in act 1 I died maybe 2 times total, once to Geonor I think and once checking the controller zoom feature. Act 2 din't finish on everyone but similarly easy, the game got so trivialized in comparison to what it was in the beginning, no idea how there can be such a divide in opinions on difficulty.
