Abysses in boss rooms.

I frequently encounter abysses in the boss arena on end game maps. I will go through the entire map without encountering an abyss, and then I need to fight a map boss alongside the most challenging rare monsters in the game. It feels like playing Arkanoid with 5 balls going at the same time. Is this intentional? This happens VERY frequently (almost half the maps I've played with abyss enabled) and it doesn't feel good.

It would be fine if there were no XP penalty and there were better rewards for winning than a normal boss, but of course this is Path of Exile so it's just another way to troll players.
