Life Remnants granted by The Covenant Altar Robe do not provide Life Overflow

I'm trying to use The Covenant Altar Robe on a Ritualist, and it spawns Remnants, which I can pick up, but there is zero overflow happening. My life just doesn't go above the standard max life. What's the deal with this?
