Ballista/Totem Unviable Support Recommendations

I was looking into using Ballistas, when I noticed that very few support gems apply to them.

Multiple of these unsupported gems are however in the recommended tab for the said Ballista skills.

Siege - (Area of Effect, Exposure, Attunement, Rising Tempest, Multishot, Immolate, Penetration, Blind)

Artillery - (Brutality, Armour Break, Pin)

Attempting to place the supports on the totem, does not result in any changes, as the viability check would imply. The area of effect remains the same, and dps or ailment changes from the other gems does not apply either.
