Attempting to rescue mappers on a character in campaign automatically results in them being lost

Was leveling a new character while running maps in kingsmarch. Sasan kidnapped them and i attempted a rescue. Portal opened, but i didn't have the required quest state. Switched character, portal's gone, and the rescue option is now greyed out so I can't do anything but abandon them.

Please make it so the portal remains open between characters or reset the interaction if you never enter the portal to begin with. Should never be losing mappers/sailors in a rescue mission unless the fight actually takes place.
