And what does punishing people have to do with game balance. You still haven't explained that. And frankly, the way the game is designed right now, PoE is dominated with certain Flavour of The Month builds that the 'hardcore' (Not Hardcore setting) players seem to be espousing as the 'One True Way to Play!' Which to me doesn't make them hardcore.
If you REALLY want to be 'hardcore', pick a knowingly bad build (like tanky, PURE melee, no Ground Slam or Lightning Strike BS, but things like Cleave, Sweep and Heavy Strike builds) and MAKE THEM WORK. Then and only then will I agree that you are the Hardest of the Hard.

Why is this penalty in Default? It makes absolutely 0 god damned sense.
This will likely be what makes me uninstall this game. I level an evasion/armour frenzy+flicker Duelist utilising Terminus Est 2H unique sword, but its pointless now because at 46 in act 3 cruel i can die in the blink of an eye and it sets me back almost 30mins because of how bad melee are and how slowly we have to clear.
This game will be a ghost town in half a year if this kind of shit isnt changed, you 200 hardcore tards can keep your empty game with no funding left.
-Retarded artificial difficulty that plagues this genre forever.
-Flawed design making melee absoutely shit plagues this genre forever.
-Stupid penalties that belong in Asian grind-em-ups plague this genre forever.
-Desync plagues this game forever.
-Stagnation and boredom plagues this genre forever.
These are the main reasons why i dont see this game going anywhere.

Makes more sense for the penalty to be on default than HC.
In HC, the death itself is punishment. I don't think that HC chars lose exp when they die, only a migration to default.

My comment has nothing to do with me telling other people whats fun.
Without a death penalty people could ignore defense and make builds with the intention of dieing often because it doesn't mean anything. You could go full magic find all of the time. In fact it would be dumb NOT to go full magic find all of the time. You would still be able to level and get more gear than anyone else at the same time. It would kill the game balance. I don't see how any game can encourage you to ignore defense with the intention of being ok with dieing.
You can already go glass cannon in this game. What kind of builds do people want to make that they can't currently make? If the game needs more diversity the devs can boost the defenses that are currently lacking. There is no need to remove the death penalty that is there for good reason.
By the way I am fine with respecting other people's opinions. I am also fine with pointing out when I disagree with something.

2) the devs already know melee is unbalanced with ranged.

FYI I do have a pure melee that works pretty darn well. Ran a map with him solo tonight.
