The new gem art just looks messy

I'm glad they made it so we can tell different skills apart just from looking at the gems, but the new look is just wrong in my opinion.

With the golden borders and details they don't look like gems anymore, but jewelry. Why would loose gems look like they're already socketed? And what's with some gems being tiny and others huge and some have more golden detailing visible than the gem itself?

Every since I got a full stash tab with gems I've been wanting new art which lets me distinguish different skills from eachother by just looking at them, but what I had in mind was a lot more subtle than the art you introduced.

I was thinking something like this:

Being a web designer I used what I had access to so it's not exactly game related icons being used here, but you get the point. It should be easy enough to see what gems I have duplicates of and what they are by quickly scanning over them.

Edit: And to iterate I think the parts that really needed to be distinguished are not much easier to tell apart with the new art. Like for instance tell curses from auras from skills. Or fire skills from lightning skills etc. There's no easy way without memorizing a lot of the new gem art.

Yes I can agree to this.

The new gems look good and all but its to messy I actually would prefer the old ones over the new...

I cant even see which ones are support gems and which ones are skill gems anymore.

Perhaps have more basic easy to read ones, and then have the current 'Gilded Gems' as a microtransaction option.
I was about to create this exact same thread.

The only thing bad about the old gems was that we could not differentiate them.

These new ones are very messy. We can't even know which are support and which are active.

The ones the OP made are exactly like I imagined the new ones would be. Great work!

The new gem art is

. I do like your recommendation for subtle marks.
OP's recommendation is superior compared to the new design imo.

I really like Op's design, except maybe the inside icon could be a tad bit bigger. I hope this gets some attention.
A subtle design like the OP suggested wouldn't help at all in my opinion. I'd still have to stare at each icon to see if they're the same or not, while the more distinctive looks from GGG allow a very quick look at my stash to determine identical gems without checking each single icon. I like it the way it is.

Most support gem icons have a distinctive shape (more circular than skill gems), with few exceptions (like Fork). Also, gems with similar properties do look similar. Just compare fire based gems or totem gems or minion gems.

I think they did a great job with the new gem art.

While I like the OP's design, it needs more contrast, the icon needs more white to be more readable.

While the current design by GGG indeed allows to spot duplicates quickly, I have two issue with it, one, the graphics seem to elaborate, which makes them hard to read, two, I can no longer quickly tell which gems are skills and which are support gems.
No good deed goes unpunished.
Well, this was just a quick mockup, mainly because I'm at work right now. :)

But while I agree that the new gem art allows you to quickly identify duplicates this was never really the main problem. The problem was finding curses, auras, different elements etc.

I was thinking that the icons could quickly show you whether it was an aura or a curse, whether it was projectile based or melee based, aoe or single target, lightning or fire, etc. etc. Neither of these issues are covered by the new art in my opinion. To see exactly what kind of gem you're looking at you could just hover over it.

Also, I have an issue with the "lore" part of it in that the new gems look like pieces of jewelry instead of gems. Putting a gem in a socket now feels like I'm cramming a whole ring or something into that socket. It doesn't feel right. :p

Also, as someone suggested in another thread having the gems glow according to their quality would also make it very easy to find gems with quality and of differing qualities.
