Is a SSD mandatory?

You're asking this to the same crowd of people who claim that trading is mandatory in spite of all the evidence that denies that. You're not going to get an unbiased answer.

I'll say this: If you can't afford to pony up for an SSD for your computer, you're probably in the wrong hobby. That's my personal bias. I'm from the age when we committed thousands of dollars a year to keeping our machines up to the standards of the industry. Today? Not so much. But get one. It's worth the cost. I spent more on my last meal out than I did on my SSD.
Not mandatory but a huge quality of life improvement for sure. And that is not only for PoE, your whole rig will profit from having an ssd. A lot.
SSD is the biggest update you can make to your computer. Just do it.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.
As others have said, an SSD is not mandatory, but it helps with initial load times. It helps noticeably in races. I would say if you are a serious racer an SSD is a must, otherwise it's nice but not needed.
Softcore, solo self-found.

That's the one I've had for a year or two now. It's been fine. They look to be pretty cheap now. Buy it instead of another supporter pack if you're worried about the money.

You don't need a 1 TB.

All you need is enough space to install your OS and your games/programs alongside. Use a second, cheap mechanical drive for your data.

A bigger one is also faster, I suppose you'd want to be as satisfied with your purchase as possible if you've managed to get yourself to break the piggybank. Let's say 256gb is a good spot to aim for, not too small and not too expensive, it might cost a meal where Shags comes from but somewhere else it's half a month of meals.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.
