Is a SSD mandatory?

You don't need a 1 TB.
All you need is enough space to install your OS and your games/programs alongside. Use a second, cheap mechanical drive for your data.

I bought a new computer a month ago. Program Files on my old drive was 500gb, give or take. Quite content with my obviously excessively large 1TB SSD, personally :P
Went with the Samsung EVO model, for reference.

Holy macaroni! Are you controlling the ISS with that rig? :D

Since the new load times have been introduced I have a terrible time playing for the first 5-8 min of the game. Even died to stuttering.

I got a gtx 980ti with a previous gen i7 and 16gb ram...

What should i do?

Try full ScanDisk to repair bad sectors + Defragmantation. Check health of your HDD with manufactures tool.. (but if troubles started with patch I doubt it is going to help).

Is a SSD mandatory? - It was in times when opening boxes made lags. Now its not problem anymore, I have switched from SSD to HDD with no more troubles.

ps: if you go with SSD in the end create ram disk for log file... but if you have 16gb ram you can play game from ram disk

If you care about quality of the gameplay SSD is a mandatory for any recent game.. Loading resources in 20GB games takes a fucktone of time..

there is zero reason for a person with an internet connection in 2016 playing a game like POE to not have an SSD.

Pretty much it is .
SSD is mandatory if you want to consider your PC decent. Not only for PoE.

I mean - it is end of 2016 and some people still don't have SSD for games. .-. What is the point of buying i7 and 1080 Titan, if you wait 5 minutes on each loading screen?

HDD is obsolete. Deal with it.

OP, since you have 16GB of RAM you can put PoE on a RAMDisk

I've used SoftPerfect RAM disk before but gave up on it as I had to recreate the image when new patches increased the size of the ggpk file (you can use the GGPK defrag tool to keep the file size small or create a large container file). The performance on a RAMDisk is better than on an SSD but using that should give you an estimate of performance gain you'll see when migrating from an HDD.

I did this with PoE before I got SSD, just had a script that created the ramdisk and copied the game to it, didn't take too long to run, then after that I would play it with really fast transitions, made me able to actually participate in racing too.

Haha. I am pretty sure both your ping and fps improved from upgrading to an ssd. Not. ;)
