Weapon type: Whips

Meh, I can do without most of those weapon types. Whips/flails as a new weapon type and crossbows as a subtype are the most fitting. Everything else just dilutes the weapon pool.

Now seriously, Whips aren't a bad thing, but pretty much every other weapon type one can conceive would be cooler to implement and more interesting to play with:
  • Scythe - Str=Dex=Int - bigger reach than Javelin's melee attack; splash on crit
  • Heavy Crossbow - Str=Dex - huge base damage per shot but ~2 second reload every shot
  • Repeating Crossbow - Str=Dex - huge base attack speed but ~2 second reload every X shots
  • Spear - Str > Dex - Bigger reach than Scythe; chance to pierce through targets within range (stacks with Piercing support)
  • Javelin - Dex > Str - decent reach; can be used in melee or thrown
  • Throwing Axe - Str > Dex - no implicit, like axes, just high damage
  • Throwing Daggers/shuriken - Dex > Int - global crit chance like daggers
  • Flail/Scourge - Str > Dex - as a subtype of Mace with different implicit - big attack speed boost when you crit
  • Scimitar - Str > Dex - as a subtype of Sword with different implicit - 1% attack speed per X Strength
  • Falchion - Str > Dex - as 2handed version of Scimitar
  • Katana - Str > Dex = Int - as a subtype of Sword with different implicit - 1% physical attack damage per X Intelligence
  • Daikatana Str > Dex = Int - as 2handed version of Katana
  • Bow - Dex - gains an implicit - 1% projectile attack damage per X Strength (stacks with Iron Grip)

EDIT: Wow whips sound awesome. If done right I think they could have an awesome feel to them. A ranged but non-projectile attack. I don't know about implicit knockback, as people avoid this stat pretty thuroughly (look at heavy strike/sweep). chance to puncture? would make sense, as a damage from whips is mostly about shallow wounds and blood :D

You could have long, heavy/slow, high damage whips, and shorter, faster, lower damage whips. would need new skills I think. There are some exceptions, but not a lot of current skill that make a ton of sense. If they had chance to puncture, sweep might be a little more desirable despite it's annoying knockback. And you could have an indiana jones-esque movement mobility where you throw your whip up into the air (outside? cmon! it doesn't matter!) and swing forward.

Or. Or, they could use it to implement a mechanic that people have already suggested before. The opposite of knockback. Pull. Makes more sense thematically too.

This would take a strong desire by the GGG team though. I believe they've noted that models and animation are a gigantic barrier to entry for implementing new weapon types. I've seen a lot of suggestions for additional weapon types but this is really the best I've heard, mostly because it's so unique mechanically and would really add another layer to existing weaponry in Path of Exile.

Still worth mentioning: Normal leather whip (etc.) Thorns Whip, Bone & tendon whip (large spinal Unique), Chain whip with iron thorns (unique), Dragon scales Tail Whip (unique).

-Bacon Whip (skin) [j/k].

About the "What new things would this weapon add?" stuff:

idea: secondary weapon slot - chair (unique, rare, etc.)
idea: secondary weapon slot - spiked bundle required (passive tree): "extends whip range X-Y".


Variant of stats this type of weapon may have:

+2 Weapon range per X or Y colour socket (i.e. per white socket).
-3% or -5% (Max of Y%) Movement restraint againt enemies (i.e. per enemy hit [Stacks]).
Pulling enemies close: game already have those in some bosses (Could be a whip only gem).
+3% or +5% (max of "X%") Armor drain against enemies (i.e. per SAME enemy hit [Stacks]). whippin' good.
Knockbacks.

idea: Flip rotation *new and unique for whips* effect explanation: enemy rotate in his axis (i.e. at 3rd stack hit), making his attacks hit something else (if not global aoe).

Fear effects in this weapon increased by "x% or Y%".

He's referring to the chakram weapon type (what colette from Tales of Symphonia uses, though i'm sure most of you children have never heard of the game) Which would be an awesome gameplay mechanic. I'm enjoying alot of the weapon suggestions here with the exceptions of the "reload after x seconds weaboo based bows". The dildo weapon type would seem to be infinitely enjoyable though rofl.
