Remove Pause from Hardcore
As much as I love the pause feature, it has no place in hardcore. This feature is extremely abusable and significantly worse than a logout macro.
Here is an example of a streamer using it (on a currently bugged fight). This "tactic" can be used by any player for any content, map or boss -- bugged or not. While being able to pause the game is a wonderful convenience, this level of convenience compromises the integrity of the game. I don't see any issue with this feature remaining in softcore, but this kind of exploitable "convenience" feature has no place in hardcore. Oh, I fully agree, but it's more complicated than that.
You could remove pause/unpause, and we (hardcore people) could still cheat death by logging out and waiting for the instance to time out. And that completely ruins the tension. To solve the problem entirely: - Hardcore instances should never time out (come on, it's only a few megabytes of data to keep around) - Remove "Respawn at checkpoint" in menu (why does that even exist!!) - Disallow pause/unpause The game should still pause when you get disconnected. And you resume right where you were, in a paused state. This is important, because deaths by disconnect (in PoE 1) are the most frustrating ones. The key point is that it should not be possible to just "wait it out" to escape certain death! I am cautiously hopeful this is just for Early Access, and it will be fixed (as above) for the real release. If not, that will be very disappointing. It makes Hardcore meaningless. |

This feature allows players to pause and analyze the fight, frame by frame, to see what attacks are incoming, where safe spots in the arena are, how many flask charges they have remaining, and so on.
In this clip, the player repeatedly pauses the fight when the boss starts up any animation, ready to log himself out if his positioning is sub optimal for any of the incoming attacks. Obviously this is completely gamebreaking and while it might not be "that big of a deal" in softcore, this kind of feature removes all integrity from hardcore. Hardcore as a game format does not and should not cater to convenience which is precisely what this pause feature aims to do. Please remove pause from hardcore. |

A quick alternative to the pause/unpause issue would be to completely blank the screen while paused in menu, in Hardcore.
You can't analyze the current state of the fight in order to plan your actions, if the background image is pitch black (except perhaps a tiny area around the character?). Note that game pausing must still remain around to handle disconnects. |

There's a like 2 seconds delay between clicking and respawning at a checkpoint AND it resets the fight so it's hardly worse than logout macro. I do it when i realize i clearly can't kill a boss, like when i run out of flasks, which is kinda IMPORTANT in a game that's new and i'm yet to see much of it; or when i see a new status appears and i need to see what it is (Myst King taught me to always do that).
It doesn't make hardcore "meaningless" either. Take it from someone who's yet to beat act 2 final on hcssf. I'm not 20 and honestly if not for the "respawn at checkpoint" i'd probably still be stuck in act 1. Like, i've seen people trying the mad wolf like 50 times on standard.
