The Debate Over Experience Point Loss

All that really needs to be done is a checkmark added when creating a character for "exp loss on" just like HC and SSF. Or a toggle for exp loss being on/off in the settings menu. This would fix this entire problem and everyone would be happy:

People that enjoy losing the time they invested into the game as if its some 2000s ancient game can have fun with exp loss on, and people that want to play a fun game can disable it. Everybody wins.

This mechanic is outdated, and the only reason its in the game is "because d2 had it". No other reason.
No thanks. Hard pass. The game is actually designed with exp loss in mind - if death has absolutely zero consequences then no one needs to build defenses either. GGG doesn't want everyone to get free level 100's either.

You're not getting an easy mode checkbox.

If I was this perturbed by a function or mechanic in a game, I would find another game to invest in, personally.

"Just go play another game" isn't helpful feedback. This is the feedback forum, and players unhappy with how such an outdated mechanic as exp loss is deleting their time and progress are giving their feedback. And its clear the majority would be happy if this mechanic was deleted, this is a fact.

I've already given positive and helpful feedback. OP doesn't appear to be receptive which is where this point came from.

So upon reaching level 100 you just remove all defenses from your character since the penalty is gone right?

No, the game was never designed with exp loss in mind lmao

Its only there "because d2 had it". No other reason, this is an objective fact.

And what do you mean hard pass? That change would literally not affect you in any way at all. You would still be able to check "exp loss on" on your characters, still have "meaningful deaths" while other people will be able to play the game their way. Everybody wins and everyone is happy. This is the best and most simple solution to this problem.

Also the "you won't have a reason to be tanky" is ridiculous. Dying already feels bad in games, even if there is no penalty. You still lose some time by dying, and have to restart from a checkpoint. Additional death penalties are absolutely unnecessary in any game period.

Senseless, archaic time-wasting mechanic is what exp loss is. Doesn't belong in any modern game.

It absolutely was. From day 1.

It's been part of the game since forever, so it was obviously designed that way on purpose. Lol
Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun.

Yeah that's why exp loss was completely removed from bosses right? And the game is still fine, this was an amazing qol improvement. No longer do you need to wait to level up to fight a pinnacle atlas boss, that just created horrible emergent gameplay in players. Good riddance. So if they were able to remove that, no reason why exp loss can't just go bye-bye alltogether.

After what, 13 years? You're right in the context that it was purely QoL - removing it alltogether is not QoL, it is drastically diminishing deliberate design, balance and gameplay choices.

It won't happen, ever. Deal with it. You will never get free level 100's in this game by repeatedly bashing or corpse-rushing your character against content. Mark these words.

You know where I can get free lvl100s though? Doing lvl83 Sanctum tomes all day, or going to TFT and joining a legion 5-way rota carry, paying them 20-30 divs and setting my game to windowed mode 800x600 while I afk in the middle with capped chaos res gear.

That's bad game design if players are forced to do these things to level up. And I happily pay all my divines to the kind legion 5-way carry hosts who get me all this free exp. Or the amazing people who host breachstone exp leech groups, I always tip them.

As soon as GGG realizes what this design is causing in the in-game economy and how ridiculous it is, it will change. Only a matter of time, just like how exp loss was removed from pinnacle bosses, just like how they caved on the "1 portal per map" system in PoE 2 and let us have more portals. Just like how they let people respec ascendancies in PoE 2. This will be no different lol

Being forced to buy carries or do safe, boring content 24/7 isn't good game design, isn't interesting nor is it a challenge or achievement. Never was never will be, lvl100 grind atm is just a monotonous chore and they nerfed the only fun way that ever appeared after the league it came out in: the 30% exp per shrine effect on you scarab. At least that scarab made it fun and quick to level even for casuals, but now its gone forever lmao

No one forces you to buy carry runs. That's you throwing currency at people while denying yourself the accomplishment. If that's how you like it - good for you. That however doesn't mean it's the default.

As far as recognizing problems goes, GGG already nerfed 5way exp and the scarab was obviously way too powerful. Good riddance.

There's already an Omen that makes leveling to 100 incredibly easy. In the times of currency exchange there's no excuse to not have it, if you're that concerned about experience loss.
