Beginner players need free identifies
Simple as that. New players really don't like getting their first magic items in the game, but not being able to even identify them. It turns that first impression into a sour one.
Yes, I realize that after 10-20 minutes that isn't a problem. You get scrolls to identify and you learn not to identify every item. Solution: Have someone in town give 5 free identifies as part of your first quest reward. This thread has been automatically archived. Replies are disabled.

I think it is intended that Scrolls of Wisdom are rare in the beginning. (like in first act)

Well that's a problem.
New players don't like having their very first items be unidentifiable. It turns that exciting beginning into disappointment. |

New characters start with three scrolls of wisdom in their inventory - unless they explicitly drop those or something, they always can identify the first few magics/rares

I will be devils advocate here. I like the rarity of the scrolls of wisdom and portal. It forces choices. Being able to easily buy a large number of scrolls makes them kind of pointless. The upgrade drop items also force choices- use them to u/g your gear or keep them as currency at the vendor.

i sympathise with this problem, even tho later in the game the drop of id scrolls is too high to be bothered getting them all (not that im complaining, handy to turn into portals). I think all u need is an npc to tell u 'hang onto those magic items and keep an eye out for id scrolls' (i imagine in deckard cains voice. . . ;P) and that would tell the newbies that they wont hav to wait long.
Never underestimate one off npc hints. |

I wouldn'take them free, but I would like to see the initial number of Scrolls of Wisdom raised to five. Help give new players a little bit more of a buffer.

It is quite easy to grab five random white items and vendor them for a scroll, there is never a shortage of white items and you only ever need to do it at the start of the game or if you get desperately low. I dont think they need to make any changes to the current system personally.

"Stay a while and listen". This voice poped in my mind as soon as I read the first post.
I created so many characters I can't count them. And I only once ran early out of id scrolls (it lasted 10-15 minutes, till my next coming back to town with white items to trade). Someone used to play RPG will usualy grab anything he can out of habbit. Someone more used to other kind of games (FPS for exemple) will mostly grab something on the floor if it can be an improvement to his current equiped gear. Without going on an extensive tutorial I think it would be great to have some voice acting/written monologues advices during the early stage of the game. There could be a list of events (finding diff kind of items for the first time, first encounter with a rare/unique mob, first finding of a waypoint...) that trigger those phrases. It would be both good for the learning of the game and the immersion factor. For exemple at the first white item drop : "what's this ? Well I can always take it and check for a use for it later" (obviously keep it shorter than I write) |

the character voice acting should suggest they find out what vendors will trade for it.
I actually didn't even know that 5 white items gave an id scroll and i have been playing for nearly a year.. I usually avoid white unless they are superior or have good sockets. |
