Poll: Monster life number display
Should numbers be shown on the monster life bars?
|
Should a monster's life bar also show a numeric value such as 690/800?
This issue has come up a few times internally and is a topic of much discussion. Action RPGs (including PoE until now) generally don't display exact monster life numbers alongside their life bars, because they die so quickly. Traditional MMORPGs do, however. Should we show these values? Note that: - We don't want to clutter the UI - We don't want to clutter the options page - We DO want to make it easy to see relevant values so that people don't feel the need to get banned for third party mods Last bumped on Dec 24, 2013, 1:47:40 PM

I feel like it should be a personal option; however, I feel as you do that not allowing this leads to a few things like third party tools and damage benchmarking.
If players can already see their damage and potentially damage per second, knowing creature life exactly can be beneficial, and the impetus for it to be kept secret is significantly diminished. I think that the display would have to be carefully chosen, but ultimately it should be up to the player if they want to add such distraction to their combat view. i dont think we need these numbers for every trash mob around.
it might be intresting on the big act bosses and alike, but its nothing i consider very much needed for myself. |

" On this note it'd be nice to be able to bind a hotkey to turn it on or off... since I doubt the FE is going to track if something is considered a boss or not. Many games have UI hotkeys to toggle options, so this would be in line with that, alongside hiding the UI for screenshots. I don't really see the numerical values being any more beneficial than just having the traditional life bar. When I think back to any ARPG I've really played I never really watched numerical values (minus if I was looking for crits), I just tended to watch the enemies health bar and my health globe/bar/etc. I kind of just see these numbers filling up extra space on the screen. The only benefit I got from having numerical values was when bosses in MMO's would have a huge health pool and a bar simply wasn't accurate enough to display the changes in their health.
However, options never hurt. Maybe it would be something to add later on in a patch or update. I think the real question to address in answering this is the visual (health bar) accurate enough to show how the enemies health will be changing or is the numerical required to see these changes. Based upon my experiences, I don't see the benefit of the numerical display. In since 0.8.0

Well there is one situation where it is important to have lots of information in ARPG's, and that is PVP.
In D2 we just made single player characters with an editor and tested our new builds against dummy characters and other PVP builds. In PoE there will not be any single player and if they don't have a dedicated PVP mode where you can easily make a maxed out character, it will be very hard to get information on what works and what doesn't. The problem here is that it takes a pretty long time to get a character to max level with good items, and if your build then doesn't work in PVP it is a lot of time wasted. This is not really relevant to monster hp, but just wanted to state my opinions on testing of PVP builds again :) |

I dont think we need those. ARPGs don't take the static, calculated way. There are always surprises, randomization and uncertainty.
In this case besides the fact that those numbers don't help more than the health bar, they just tell you how the fight will be before you even hit the enemy. But with only health-bar option you'll never know how long will the fight last before you hit the mob. OFC I assume you encountered that mob first time. This was one of the reasons Diablo I revealed demon-monster info after you kill that specific type more than a few times. Shorthly, I vote for No or D1 route. He who fights with monsters
might take care lest he thereby become a monster. |

I really don't think it is needed. I voted "no" but if it was an option that is fine also.
When im playing an ARPG I want to be killing mobs not looking at their health, would be more beneficial for bosses or monsters that take more than one or two hits to die. RIP Bolto

Seems like a pretty strong consensus so far. I agree, the actual numbers aren't all that necessary.

It's not really needed because we will be fighting lots of monsters at once ,its not like player-turned game or something.
Repent! That's what i'm talking about!
