Voted for "if enabled", but personal preference would definitely be for the Diablo-I style of earning information through kills.
I have wandered through insanity;
I have walked the spiral out.
Heard its twisted dreamed inanity
In a whisper, in a shout.
In the babbling cacophony
The refrains are all the same:
"[permutations of humanity]
are unworthy of the name!"

100% agreed! Unlocking more and more informations after killing more and more monsters of the same type.
Its interesting to know, how much life and mana a specific monster has. Just to compare to yourself and to think about tactics, the own dmg output etc.

Its not needed (most arpg fans will agree like seen in this topic), however I'm sure there will be people, especially without much arpg experience (as a free game PoE must attract all kind of players) who will want it. So make it an option I guess.
If it shows % rather than the actual health number id say yes. Numbers get a little hard to read round the 1000+ hp mark(fast combat remember). Unless your a calculator.
Cheaper than free... Speedtree
I can't remember what game it was, but i remember instead of bars they used circles. Full health would be a regular circle then the less health the smaller the little orb over their head. It was easy to keep track of because cirlces are such basic shapes that the human mind can process. Something you could do to depart from bars which can be deceiving.

Also larger enemies had slightly larger circles above them so you could tell just by size how tough a enemy was. I found it to be quite an intuitive system.
Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.

Not wanting to clutter the UI I can understand, although in this case I don't think it will at all, since it's just a number and will probably be inside the the health bar (eg won't take up any extra space).
But not wanting to clutter the options page? I do realise that there are some people who seem allergic to large numbers of options, but having an "advanced" or miscellaneous" tab should be enough to eliminate that concern.

The monster name is already there. If you consider something like D2, most of the enemies you were able to kill within 2-5 hits which means you can kill most enemies without even noticing the life bar. In fact, you tend to learn how many hits it takes to kill a particular enemy, not how much damage you need to deal.

True, but for bosses and mini-bosses having the information as an option would be nice. While most players do tend to measure by hits some players look deeply into the mechanics and like very detailed information about the character's output. Anyways having the option is never a bad thing, but forcing a player to have clutter is a bad thing. Like Malice said having a Advanced tab could keep things clean in the options. For those that want the data though i think it's a no brainier to include in the game.

Option menus should always be organized but very robust.

As an example... DDO has a fairly robust options menu.

In the end, player option > what some might consider clutter.... not having the option at all to do something you want to do is always worse than the alternative.

Bars, circles, dwindling packets of cheezels - all visual and assimilated at a glance.

Numbers, whether integer or a percentage, seem redundant and require closer scrutiny than I would be willing to give, especially when things are busy.

I voted no but, in hindsight, would settle for if enabled to pander to the numerologists out there.
I used to be apathetic, now I just don't care.
