Yes you can cast the aura. It is not free though, still takes the % mana reserve. It benefits from passives, but in many cases can't be linked to reduced mana (it seems to appear quite often on belts so no sockets, not sure if it can be found on items that have sockets).

There are quite a few auras that can appear on items with sockets.

is there a specific way to open a corrupted strong box? I ran into a yellow one today, and killed everything in the map, rechecked a bunch of times, but the strongbox still has runes floating around it and it says its locked. is this a bug?

1) This is a 10! years old post.
Don't use such old things.

2) You can open corrupted strongboxes like other ones.
Can't remember I had problems with unid rares, think u can id them now.

3) There's a Atlas passives to get some (one?) strongbox corrupted.
As u noticed it's another level of gambling.

4) Tips for opening boxes:
Most dangerous are boxes which explode bodies (DD = Detonate Dead) or freeze you.
If these can kill u ID the box and/or remove the bodies with DD or other skills before opening.
I don't ID but use ALWAYS a anti-freeze flask after opening.
I do this too to refill my mana, because I had layed some mines and set a decoy totem near the box.
This is a good help versus a box (or a boss fight which starts some seconds later).
