Say as a pair you must kill Hoarbeast the Glistening Fiend of Snowblind Pass a level 30 boss underleveled by say 5 levels while only wearing Blue Equipment without first enlisting the aid of Falimar the Longshoreman.

Then the league would revolve around character teams attempting to achieve the fastest time/score by completing secondary objectives.

Or, take a page right out of DOTA and have two points duke it out with troops and have player support with a heavy emphasis on PVP.
Nothing like being able to have 30 players all duke it out. There's a reason why it's a popular game the world over.

just my opinion to make it like dota, you are playing a strategy/war game, not an ARPG...

True, but isn't the point of leagues to bend the rules and make a new "game" out of it? I mean DotA is a pseudo-rpg/strategy game that takes place inside of an RTS.

The concept of leagues doesn't have to be limited by the overall goals of the normal league game does it? Couldn't they even make a capture the flag league? Say you just wanted to play a quick game instead of grinding away on your normal character. Join a league that has accelerated leveling, or set levels and items, and has an entirely different goal. Could adapt leagues to do almost anything!

Leagues are like ladders in diablo 2... it's the same game, but they can restrict things to make it harder, not change the game entirely...
though an interesting league would involve 98% less items... and 98% less item rarity...
so would make items in the league very valuable... and skills more important
---
i would definitely like some tower defence action . i would run them as open constantly active battlefields with relative power level restrictions .

would like match style setups also . should have power restricted maps to preserve balance and all-play maps for those who dont want to wait *bad idea for lowbies* .

im still waiting/looking for a good moba with some real rpg aspects . locos 'growth' systems are badly done . have not played lol in a while but the skill trees were inadequate for my rpg/growth desires . poe's systems are sure to be better plus the gear makes it a good foundation to build on .
--- .
I hate to keep relating to Diablo, but lets face it. This genre is now measured against Diablo. Maybe in a few years it will be measured against POE, but right now that's not the case. In my hours and hours of grindind D2 I always wished I had a kill/performance tracker. A league where everyone is tracked in kills/ damage done/ damage done per second of combat/ most powerful attack/ so on and so forth. The leaders in every category could get some type of cool trophy or title to carry around with them. Just a thought.

I like the idea of an infinite dungeon and you see how deep you can get.

How about a PvP oddball sort of league where players fight to get some small item which gives some small stat boosts and marks you on everyone else's minimap. The item is dropped when you die. The player holding the item at the end of the time limit wins. Depending on how many people are in the league, there could be multiple items.

How about a PvE league called Hero. Players can take as much time as they want to gain experience and loot by killing random monsters and doing minor quests but the ultimate goal is to kill the super powerful boss at the end. If you're killed by one of the standard creatures then you can always respawn but if you go to challenge the main boss and die then you're dropped from the league. The league ends when someone finally manages to kill the boss. As a bonus, the corpses of the ten last players the boss killed can be seen in (or right before) the boss's room.

I don't really like the league idea where players with the lowest experience are dropped randomly. If a player sees that he's fallen too far behind then he'll simply quit because he knows he can't win. The league will end up being a competition between the top few players and that's it.

There should be very competitive leagues where players can join by invite from GGG only (maybe the top ten players overall) and they have to perform some task. Other players not in the league can then log in and watch the best players.

There are some good ideas in this post and this thread, though I thought I should comment on this particular quote here.
The intention of the attrition league is that it is a relatively short lived league. A player who has fallen pretty far behind isn't eliminated until he's at the bottom, so as long as he thinks he can stay away longer than the people above him, it's worth continuing. Plus, in hardcore cut-throat leagues, you never know when your opponents might accidentally perma-die. I expect it'd only get played by pretty serious players, so it's okay if it is mostly just competition between 10-20 crazy people. There are plenty of other leagues for people who prefer less stressful types of play :)

Major League and Minor League
Major League wouldn't be permanent death but it would be harder than standard play.
Minor League would introduce players to ARPGs.
Ultraviolence League (named after Doom difficulty setting)
in "UVL" there would be A LOT MORE BLOOD and GORE and enemies will be able to use more lethal abilities. (the name might have to change though).

+ Toilet League for those with potty mouths (like myself) that is really Gorey and permadeath this way no one joins without the commitment to enjoy the game without being offended... sometimes bad words come out that doesn't mean that we should kick that person... they are people too and should have an area they can play in.
I love virtual brutality so save it for the Mobs...
