[3.5] Occultist Cold DoT Caster (Cold Snap + Vortex) WIP

Just a little update - killed Red Elder today, 0 deaths, 0 problems on 5l Vortex and 4l Cold Snap. Tbh Vortex Damage is just nuts, do not foresee any problems with Guardians, Shaper and even Uber. Everything just freaking melts)
Hello. I see u use ele focus at both gem setups. So it mean that chilled ground still work? I thought it doesnt so my setups will be Vortex + Hypothermia + Conc + Controlled Destruction + Efficacy + Swift Affliction and Cold Snap + Hypothermia + Conc + Controlled Destruction + Efficacy + Bonechill.
Do Vortex with ele focus still can chill?

Since I saw some streamers taking these skills as their starter builds... I got interested in it, but to be honest it is a pain to level... up until you get vortex it feels awful to use any frost skill, and I feel extremly squishy and have a hard time to even take syndicate members down... I rather skip them now.

With Vortex and then Blasphemy & Frostbite it became better, but still fells kinda lacking somehow... either survivability or damage... I think a "how to level this up until mapping" could help - anyone else having the challenge?

Yes, chilled ground still works and since it has a minimum of 10% chill effect it works even better then the chill from hit would, cause to get even 10% on something like Shaper we would have to hit like a truck.

Yes, it is always hard to level as CI, you have almost no HP, and ES is lacking at the start. Also you are right, until you get Vortex you should level with other powerful spells like Arc for example. Although I was leveling as Freezing Pulse, then switched to Cold Snap in act 2, it was a bit clunky at first, but at least you are getting the hang of it, cause playing with cold snap requires some getting used to. But after you get Vortex in 3-4 link with +1 to cold gems life gets so much easier, just run and leave icy puddles of death everywhere)

And regarding the "level this up until mapping part" - I've said it several times in this thread - NEVER go CI as your first character in the league unless you are absolutely sure that you know how to do it. And if it is not your first character - then any spellcaster leveling guide will do. Its all the same - get +1 to X gems, get Goldrim/Wanderlust/Tabula etc and go melt everything)

Also, I've never intended this to be a full build guide, I just wanted some pointers on the tree and then people just started using it) I'm not sure I will write a full guide, but if you have any questions - you can always /w me ingame (ColdAsYouAre is my characters name) and also my profile is open so you can see everything.

No bad intentions here :) Thank you for you reply! It is my second char this season, BV Ele is my main, and I never played as CI before... so everything feels totally awful right now, but it got better, with Vortex and now approaching Level 40... but still, the Syndicate bosses are horrible and I can barely survive them.

So I guess I am gonna focus on blasting through the content to get to mapping, and get the gear from my other char to test.

Edit: Some input from ZiggyD who is also playing similiar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OKAnJKSISE

Yeah, that's exactly what you should do)

Regarding Ziggy's version - I've seen it. Liked his idea for Storm Brand instead of OoS, will try it. Other then that - I really like the ability to get +2/3 to gem levels for Vortex in 2h weapon (either bow or staff depending on your preferences) so I do not like his 1h+shield setup, but hey, that's the beauty of PoE - everyone can take a build and adjust it to their playstyle.

Oh I just saw you are going with a bow... never seen that, looks kinda fun :) And yeah, that is the beauty of PoE, I just love how crazy this game is ^^
How about elemental reflect? By this time you knows bad things about build, why don't you share with us? As well as some achievements to motivate?

I don't know what is WIP, why people don't writing pro/cons of their builds? Can you add a short video with showcase of play style (trash and boss fights)?

This thread was never intended as a full build guide. WIP means "work in progress". You can do ele reflect but have to be very careful and slow and it is usually not worth it.

There was a video posted couple posts above of ZiggyD doing very similar build. Watch it if you want to see gameplay, it is the same for all cold DoT build - run, drop Vortex, if something survived or wasnt in Vortex AoE - slap it with Cold Snap.
