[3.24] Cheapbunny's Dominating Blow/Herald of Purity Guardian

CheapBunny,

Not sure if you see these comments, but I have a question for you:

In looking at the build, I was considering getting a wand instead, for the extra +Minion Damage. In your build, you use the Whirling Blades gem, which I wouldn't be able to use with a wand. My thought was that I could continue to use Shield Charge, so I'd still have a skill to move quickly on the screen.

Is there another reason Whirling Blades is in the build, something I'm not seeing?

Sorry if this is a basic question, this is my first PoE char, and I'm still working a lot of things out!

Update: I still wouldn't mind hearing back about this question, but I finally realized I can get +Minion Damage on a claw. Didn't notice before, because I was just looking at all 1 handers, and no claws showed up in the first huge bunch I looked at. For some reason, the claws w/+MD are very expensive. But they do exist :)

Dominating Blow is a melee skill and does not work with wand.

DOH! Thanks very much. As I said, 1st char, and I'm still learning :)
This is outdated even though it says 3.24.

Awful guide

Awful guide

Thank you for your wonderfully useful post.

Care to toss out a reason or two for your opinion?

From the introduction:

"I have never played Guardian before, decided to try out the the new Guardian ascendancy in 3.22. It turns out to be a quite tanky build (72/64% block, 90%all ele res/75% chaos res/100% spell suppress) with decent clear speed, it can even clear Simulacrum 30 rather reliably.

Although I have done some ubers with this build, it is definitely not a great ubers boss farmer due to melee playstyle and high damage ramping time, bosses other than ubers are not too much of a problem though.

If you looking for a tanky build to map with decent clear speed, try out this build, enjoy!"

So far, I can say it's living up to what it's billed as. He gives disclaimers as to what it's not good for.

So what's your beef with the build (without trying to make it something it's not claiming to be)?

First of all, I'm not an experienced player at all. This, to me, is just a lazy guide with no effort put in (other than the initial post, which was for 3.22). The author just slapped 3.24 on this page to get more attention and bait newbies like me to try to follow this broken guide, where in reality, you end up struggling and completely break your build if you try to follow this.

All of the tattoos (apart from the 6% cold res) used in this guide are outdated and literally don't exist, which is crucial because the build is playing around with "The Green Nightmare Viridian Jewel" to give you MAX spell suppression and MAX elemental res (with tattoos), which is impossible to achieve if you follow this.
The author just assumed they were in the game without double-checking and ignored everyone else who pointed it out.
I was deep 5 divines (which is a lot for me) into this before I realized.

Second of all, they're using outdated mechanics like "just bind Molten Shell on left click and forget it," and sure there's automation now, but it breaks the build by not having all of your abilities described here per gear slot.

Third of all, while some of the gear is cheap, to get one portion of the gear is literally impossible (Timeless Jewel (impossible to get the same one and no mention of any alternative ) & Melding of Flesh, which also is awful to get because you're not maxed on res because of lack of tattoos) and costs between 50-100 divine orbs in THIS LEAGUE, which the author failed to detect and point out.

Overall, this guide has been a pain to follow and it SHOULDN'T have 3.24 on the title unless the author actually went through and updated it properly.

Newbies like me end up having an awful time and struggle to understand what they're doing wrong (like some people pointed out here on this thread already) and inevitably quit because of frustration.

I also wanted to point out that while I was having difficulty and DMing the author about my issues, they just ended up ignoring me.

OK, thanks, THAT'S a useful post.

I'm a slow, methodical player, and don't play that much to begin with, so I'm not at the point you are yet. However, I did already know about tattoos not existing any more, and was already planning how to get around that.

I guess I'm using it as a GUIDE, and not trying to literally do exactly what he has done. At this point (I'm level 74), it's been very useful. In looking at re-speccing my passives, I had already decided I was going to do some things a little differently.

Perhaps my approach of going slow helps, since I've been learning about things before I need to know about them. I'm also not in Necropolis, but Standard, so perhaps the economy is not working against me so much. Not that I've used it much. I've sold nothing, and have bought 5 items for 1 Chaos each. I >AM< now getting to the point where I'll be spending on more expensive items, but not even that much, because my liquid net worth is probably less than one Divine :)

As to the Molten Shell issue, I hadn't even seen that comment in his notes, and I don't even have Molten Shell yet (as I said, I'm using it as a guide, and not trying to follow it exactly). But I was already aware of the left-click/automation gem changes.

Regarding the Timeless Jewel, I already solved that one, and will share the answer. Again, it's because I'm going slow, and researching things before I need to know about them. I learned this tip from asking in the forums here, and got a great answer. Use this website: https://vilsol.github.io/timeless-jewels/tree

Once there, follow the prompts, and select which notables you want (minion damage, minion life, etc), and it will tell you all the timeless gems which match your filters, and with the weighting you can enter, you'll see which ones are REALLY good, and which ones meet fewer of your requirements. And then next to each search result, there is a "TRADE" button which loads a tab on the trade site, already filtered for the jewel you want. I spent about 30 minutes messing with it, and actually found one result which almost exactly matched the example in his guide, and it was only 1 Divine. If I'd had a Divine, I'd have bought it right then.

As to the 3.24 complaint, I started this under 3.23, and never bothered looking at the changes he made for 3.24. Like I said, I go slow :)

Sorry to hear you've had a bad experience with the guide.

Edit: I missed the Melding of the Flesh comment. Yeah, that's one of the things I was going to likely skip, and not for the cost (haven't even priced it, yet). If you look at the items he uses (in the 3.23 version, the one I'm using), he still has resists on many items, for the two resists he doesn't even need! I figured it's not that hard to max the resists (I already have), so was going to skip that for now, and I can always change my mind later and get it then if I want to.

I may be a noob here, but why triggering the Holy Relic on damage taken? Wouldn't it be better to summon it once and then it stays at your side the whole time?
Are you going to update this for 3.25 ?
