Reminder: Selectable Character Gender is a "Minimum Bar."

I guess I'm one of those "weirdos" that simply does not care. Never did, and never will.
Ever since I've started playing games, the gender of the main character never felt special nor did it feel ill suited for thew role. I'll play a two headed furry if the game is good enough.
Now if the option to choose a gender and /or build your own avatar is available is always a nice bonus, but I never feel like I need to have it.

I'm open for as many options as possible, but won't cry if there aren't.

It's not weird to not care. Plenty of people don't care. Nonhostile indifference isn't an issue at all.

Unfortunately, this forum has a history of being very, very much hostile in its indifference. This thread has been remarkably well behaved and I'm surprised and grateful for that, but folks have said some truly atrocious things to me on the subject in this place in the past.

I've got no issue with someone simply not wanting the option. I will, however, grapple with incorrect arguments (i.e. 'they can't do it, it's too much modeling work'). The idea is important to me and I'll champion it however I have to, even if it's a forlorn hope at this point.

But yeah. Don't worry about not caring. So long as you're not upset that I care, that other people do care, we're totally cool.

EDIT:
hmgc020, ArtCrusade: if you guys had seen some of the things people said to me on this issue in the past, you'd totally get why I wrote what I wrote. I was attempting to fend off those people. I won't apologize for the tone, but I will express regret that some folks are feeling called out who shouldn't be.

it's a generally meaningless thing in an ARPG since past voice lines (and i ended up turning those off) there is no indication what gender your character is...so a waste of money tbh

Also to further that it ends up adding extra work every time they add anything since they are likely to require their own rigging and tweaks to get things looking right, new animations, new voicing etc...again just a waste of money for something that matters only to a handful of people.

I know what the metaphor means. And as I see it, "dying" in this regard is ignoring the outcome/consequences. GGG isn't dying on this hill, because there won't be any consequences. The "cost/consequences" part of that metaphor is important to its meaning. You should look it up

That's wildly presumptuous to assume there will be no consequences. According to whom? I mean sure, it can be your opinion, but to dismiss it as inconsequential seems naive. People do care about this regardless if you don't.

When someone in the game media inevitably asks GGG about the lack of a selector, they will have to say something. If they simply said because we actively choose not to, then they deserve any and all blowback they get.

Edit: to reiterate, I personally do not care. This isn't a thing for me. But I'm not oblivious to what it means to some. And this is a question that has come up to GGG in the past. It does matter to people, and I'm not going to just dismiss it.

Whatever the outcome ends up being, it's fine for me. But I won't be gaslit that this is a total nothing burger, when GGG has all the ability in the world, and seemingly no valid reason not to add this as a player option.

Indeed it is. I stand by it, though - as I really struggle to see this being game breaking for anyone in this kind of game. And if someone finds it game breaking, they are probably so few and far in between that they will have no affect on numbers, statistics or ratings, hence "no consequences".

It's a "nice to have" feature if it suits the game, sure. But FAR from "minimum bar" or "required".
Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.

I guess that depends on what game breaking means to you. Some people don't play Blizzard games due to a moral stance. Is that technically game breaking to you?

If GGG comes out with some not-to-popular opinion on gender, that's more of a PR issue than something directly game related. Right? Or did you mean deal breaker and not game breaker?

I don't know, again I don't feel super strongly about this, but I do feel a certain way about how dismissive some people are about how another opinion might land. And to say that anyone that has an issue with a gender selector falls into a relatively smaller population, and thus is insignificant... well there is a word for that, but the CoC would likely be applied.

go woke go broke.
A thought and suggestion, the character models are built into the game. All of them with the same animations enabled, why are they locked to a specific class?

I wouldn't expect any ARPG to have Baulders Gate level of character creation. I also don't want to see a binary selection of genders in todays times. But perhaps not locking the character models to a specific class is an easily implemented solution?

Obviously that is untrue and if prompted you wouldn't even be able to give any evidence for it. Just one counter-example out of many: Barbie was the most blatantly "woke" movie in 2023, and also grossed the highest amount of money.
