I like the season ... and quit anyway
Idk how to put it: i would like to play this season but i quit and uninstalled (looking foward to PoE2 though), for the same reason i never made it to lvl 100 (and i played since beta ... with some gaps) >>> hitting the floor - either too fast, too much and/or without any "warning" or out of nowhere.
I tried melee this time (firste time past campaign). Selfmade build (on the fly) as Earthshatter/Smashing Fist Chieftain (it worked and was fun). It went down OK - until i frequently got annihilated at T1 white maps. I had res capped close to 80%, almost 4k HP, capped attack/spell block (with glancing blows), ok-ish armor and meh chaos res by the point i got to endgame. Never before did i had issues transitioning to mapping. I saw myself dieing at the beginning of endgame (which is frustrating on its own) and got PoE PTSD by imagining the rest of endgame progression. In the end it will get me anyway: you cant really see whats goin on the screen and you just die whithout knowing how and why. The most fun i had with my last take as Forbidden Rite Juggernaut. He was basically immortal ... until he wasnt. 10k hp (5k effective whith Petrified Blood), 4.5 k effective HP reg per sec, 5 "perma" endurance charges, 40k armor all res capped + all ele flasks looped indefinetly - and he still got bonked by some random mobs from time to time. Why is this game this way? It is so annoying and frustrating in combination with the XP pentalty. You cant read the situation with random rare/elite mobs and the clusterfck goin on on the screen, to prevent dieing effectivly. Some people and some builds can, or they dont mind. I cant, and i mind - and so i quit ... and still want to play (because everything else is really good). I do hope things will get better with PoE2 ... Last bumped on Jul 31, 2024, 1:24:37 PM

" This is usually a road people go down in this game and end up failing at end game with how complex things now are. You really have to know what you are doing to not run into this issue and its okay to not know, as there is a lot to know. And things massively changed this patch as well for this side of the tree. I am looking at your build and there are a lot of questionable things that happened on supports/tree/gear etc... but... Since you are having trouble living ill just highlight whats going on with your defense. 1) You have low life, 3611 and being on this side of the tree is very low. 2) You arent scaling any base type. Your armour is extremely low for being on this side of the tree. 3) You have no guard skill. A simple cwdt+molten shell goes a long way 4) Avoiding endurance charges. This is one of the strongest defensive options, and you specced into none of them. You have enduring cry even in your setup. 5) Your chaos res is in the negative. 6) You should have your 3rd ascendancy done before you enter maps. Its from the campaign why is that not allocated? You would have Valako if you did. 7) Your choice of getting block/spell block cap with glancing/versitile this early will not help you. Mash the clean

" Thx for the feedback. You points are all valid, i do understand them and see the issue (the block cap is for retaliation btw). But: My problem is that it cant be required to have all those points adressed at the start of endgame. I am talking about being stomped at T1 maps (while i was just fine during the campaing). I have to start somewhere. Sure part of the problem was the fact that i went in without a prebuild from some pro (i may not be a pro, but i enjoy trying out builds on my own or tweaking builds - and it usually aint that bad). Sure, the gear is not good, i'll need some more SP and shift some things around in the tree and optimize things in order to push into the next map tier. But at times i could not take the hits by trying to get a 0.8 sec attack off vs normal or blue mobs (while i could during the last chapter in the campaing). Aaaand maybe i am just to bad for playing melee - but still: that is why i quit. And i dont think its all on me. This game has issues. (I had build "attempts" in the past that turned out to be lacking. But that usually manifasted itself in yellow or red map tiers. I did realise that i would more armor and hp. And that the fist issue to adress would be the negative chaos res. But i should be able to do this while doing T1 and T2 maps - without already capped armor, ele and chaos res. This is just stupid. Why is (true) melee still this gimped?) Last edited by Alopex81 on Jul 30, 2024, 5:16:59 AM

While definitely a build problem, I kinda hate how PoE lacks some sort of 'transition' layer - you could be crushing the campaign with your self-made build, but then be completely destroyed in T1 maps only because you lack layers upon layers of defenses (obviously a slight exaggeration) that are necessary to survive there.
Let's say you fcked up your build, and can't even farm T1. Your only choices are making a fresh character or farming zones in final acts which have really bad drops compared to even T1. Imho, either T1 needs to be easier and more accessible or they need to provide some other alternative where you can farm currency to recover from a bad build. Thankfully we at least have Heist now where you can make some currency for respec. And now you can also respec using Gold, so there's that.
" Exactly. I could clear those maps. Sometimes i died once and on time i died 3 times in a row (instantly - probably because of chaos dmg). The problem is that some of the mobs do some thing or some type of dmg that just deletes you while the rest works just fine. You have to build layers and cap stuff just for those mobs (setting beside end endgame and bossing). And most of the time you cant really tell before - you just hit the floor, or your flasks cant keep up. You can circumvent much of this by playing ranged with mad dmg. But melee just sucks if you cant even do basic endgame stuff without already having all defenses maxed. This all would be less of an issue if one wouldnt loose the XP. There is room for hard and punishing gameplay (T16+ and stuff), where there is litte to no room for errors - but i would like to get there without insta deaths with XP penalty. I played basically all major and even minor APRGs since Diablo 1. None of those games is as bad with this kind of issue as PoE (the power creep extremes can get insane, for players as for the mobs - the extremes are to extreme).
You don't need that many layers for t1 maps. Honestly, your stats, while a little low for your level, are plenty for t1 maps. I suspect your playstyle is the main issue. You are probably focussing too much on crushing fist, getting hit way more than you would normally do to unlock it. Try switching to Earthshatter as your primary skill aka put it into your 5 link and move around more. Only use crushing fist as a secondary option when it happens to unlock don't try to unlock it by taking hits on purpose.
There are also gear issues that you could solve asap. Get an amethyst ring instead of your ruby ring and use all those open suffix slots you have to cap your ele resist via bench craft. There is no point putting 21 str on your body armor, it's a massive waste. According to POB you are also missing 4 passive points given your level. Assuming you didn't just not allocate them yet, go back to the campaign and do the remaining skill quests to get those points. You don't need crazy gear and million layers of defense for white maps, just use the resources available properly. Right now you're wasting potential left and right. " I am aware that i miss SP from quests and that have to do the lab. I just finished the campaing whithout issues, thats why i did not adress some of those things so far. I just went in and did 3 or 4 maps just to see how its goin. As stated - not that well. All you recommendations would certainly improve things. But even then i dont think i would enjoy it. I could reroll a non melee build ... idk. This game has the best meta and mechanics of all the APRGs - amd the most frustrating and irrating combat. Maybe this reminded me of this, even though much of it is on me too. Thx anyway.
Hey there,
I hope I checked out the correct character. Disclaimer: I am not a pro, just somebody with basic enough knowledge to follow a guide. What I saw, you maybe misunderstood how resistances are working. You have 80 max cap correct, but you have to reach this cap in order to take effect with your gear. Your gear has almost no resistances, especially cold and lightning. Get gear with those resistances and you should be fine for the beginning!
" I mean if you don't want to play because you don't enjoy it and rather quit then go ahead. But if you jump into content while missing so much basic progression on your character then you really shouldn't be surprised if things don't go well. |

I think it would be of great help if mobs had colored glow on their weapons/mainhand according to their strongest resulting damage type dealt, after taking in all layers upon layers of RNG you may roll. Seeing chaos damage mobs in advance would really help restore at least part of player agency with combat. Currently game is played by preparation in hideout, when you go out in the field, you cannot see what you are fighting and just hope RNG holds for you long enough.
Non-damage rare mob modifiers also need vfx indicators, text somewhere above screen is not sufficient for how fast this game is. Yes, intuitive mob design is tedious and expensive part of development, but it is this what makes D2/D3/D4 mobs memorable, and poe mobs just abstract moving mass doing... something. |
