Thinking out loud here…
So the ascendency that causes all damage from hits to contribute to shock. It seems no one takes it… and at first it made sense as it seems useless if you’re purely lightning… but this got me thinking:
There’s a node in the passive tree (I have it, forget what it’s called) that adds %Extra as cold. Also on 99% of our wands, we have extra %damage as ____.
Having that ascendency would make those various types of damage contribute to shock, which would be huge. Way more impactful than crappy crit storm thing.
It’s hard for me to tell via testing because everything on the screen gets deleted regardless, but, feedback/discussion needed.
The way I understand conversion/"gain as extra" in poe 2 is that it only applies to base damage and not the damage you allready "gain as extra", you can see this in the skill tooltip when taking the %lightning as cold node, its a miniscule amount of damage since it doesnt scale the archmage damage (which is where most of our flat comes from). As such the ascendancy seems kind of bad since 95+% of our damage is still going to be lightning.
Yeah, this is how I understand it also, but even still, having that damage contribute to shock is the best option out of all the others, no? Storm is underwhelming, recoup is even worse. Idk.

I also asked myself the question if the extra damages from other sources are worth it since I also have 32% extra as cold and 6% extra as chaos, but on the tooltip the damage are so low that shock chance must be so low from these sources.
There is still the option to make something like this if we want to have the most damage:
At least 12% more elemental damage give us better CoS proc with good shock magnitude and crit damage boost.
Edit: We can have also 12% spell crit, and it may be better since a crit is a shock.

I gave it a shot and I found the branching bolts node(s) helping my clear speed greatly. However, I am a bit puzzled because he does not spec much into defense such as increased ES and Manareg. Therefore, I am a bit torn currently on what approach to follow.
My gear is not great.
Also, I am still wondering about how much lightning pen is needed. The aforementioned guide does not spec into this at all and also does not use the lightning pen gem. I think the idea is that the needed penetration comes from conductivity and exposure. Do normal mobs have like 0% lightning res and therefore penetration is only needed for mobs with special affixes?

Your issue is likely a lack of DPS. Even at 12k combined Mana+ES I would still fall over if I get surrounded and attacked. The best way of surviving close-quarter combat is just deleting enemies. With ritual specifically you have two approaches:
1) Just get a lot of mana/spell damage/gem levels/etc and brute force the DPS check.
2) Go for 100% pierce through Annoint+Jewels and remove the pierce gem/chain nodes if you have them. With that combination you get insane DPS in ritual specifically since your sparks just bounce around the tiny arena with infinite pierce and keep hitting every enemy.

Would you say that this pierce approach does more damage than the chain approach via Branching Bolts and its "sub"-nodes? One cannot have pierce AND chain, right?

Sorry, I got here late. I think I'm following along. I just filled out the early game passive tree, and now i see that mid game is completely different. You bail on 19 nodes that do damage to mostly get travel nodes. Should I save up a certain number of skill points or wait for specific gear before i make the jump to the mid game passive tree?

Is it worth putting chance of shock and magnitude of shock even if you don't take crit nodes in the passive tree or in the gear?

white mob have no res, so just keep the pen gem for swap it if you map have +50% ele res on mob, for some rare or boss exposure on orb of storm + curse is enough.
about ritual, no secret, should have enough dps for clear the first spawn close to you, could be hard with buggy location sometime . ( sigil of power , orb of storm than click on ritual after).
but honestly i die too much when i try it ealy mapping,so i stop it , restart only in t15 after upgrade gears and reach around 20-25k dps on spark tool tip.
once reach +30k they become much more easy.
have 5.6k es and 5k mana, and as soon i see es drop, i think i die, so quick teleport, help a lot for clunky situation.
