Can't use greater essence on equipped item / socketed item

I'm trying to upgrade my magic crossbow using a greater essence. This is my item:

When trying to use the essence I first got the message "Error: Item is equipped" (which is already weird, sice you can use currency on equipped items in PoE2). After unequipping the item and trying to use the rune while the crossbow is in my inventory, I got the message "Error: Item's sockets are not empty".

I'm not sure if this behaviour is intended or not, but it seems weird and it's never mentioned that this should not be possible.

Also facing this issue.
Pretty big issue. How did they not catch this?

Same here, not sure if it's intended or a bug.
finally got enough to buy the essence.. guess i'm waiting on a bugfix
I'm experiencing the same issue, I've tried applying a greater essence to my bow got the same "Error: Item's sockets are not empty" message.

It feels unintuitive since it's not mentioned anywhere that this shouldn't work. Hopefully, this gets addressed soon. I'd hate to outlevel my weapon before being able to upgrade it properly.
Just encountered the same issue, i could also not see anywhere ingame where it mentioned that socketing runes into an item would effectively make it uncraftable. However this feels like a bug because i tried a quick bit of science on a throaway crossbow that i socketed a rune into an i was able to regal the crossbow but not apply essences.

HOpefully this'll get fixed as ive got a juicy crossbow i want to get a crappy affix with my Greater Essence of Torment!
