What 1 portal did for me, good or bad
I started poe on dec6, played my own build all through campaign had lots of fun.
Got to map, died once to a breach. Got overwhelmed couldn't kill fast enough. Saw my map was just gone. I then proceeded to maxroll and other websites. Found a new build and rerolled. Since then, I have made 6 new characters all pre-built builds, and I will never make my own because of this. Now I clear t15 and got all my 8 ascendancy points. I would bet this is true for the overwhelming majority of players, otherwise these build sites would not exist. It isn't a matter of "get good." it's a matter of "I do not feel inclined to waste my time with a build that will punish me for experimenting." For a game ment to be "slower" it definitely feels punishing to go slow, and feels no different than poe1 now, so back to poe1 screen clear builds it is. I do not have 8+ hours a day to dedicate to just this game, nor would I want to. Meta build gaming is the only thing pushed more so than before, via this system, not getting better. Don’t need meta or 10+hours a day
Sorry you’re not having fun |

That is exactly my problem with 1 portal mapping.
I usually like to choose a bit weaker non-meta build so that I can enjoy upgrading it for a long period of time since I do not like playing alts at all. 1 portal mapping punishes weaker builds A LOT more than meta builds. Sure you could say it is my fault for picking a weak build, but that is 100% what I could do in poe 1 and progress. In poe 1 you could pretty much clear all content with any skill only difference being how fast you farm / progress. |

I agree with the part about using your own build being fun until you hit a wall. Depends on how bad your build is, since my first character(warrior) hit that wall in campaign. But eventually you will hit a wall and be unable to proceed without changing your build or needing divine+ gear in slots.
The people who originally created the "meta build" you decide to follow took some time to read skill gems, passive tree nodes, and how they scale to come up with the idea. So obviously making your own build works. If it works incredibly well and you post it then it might become a meta build. |

" The build I used came from ziggyd..... Yea I guess I could spend the hundreds of hours he spends cuz his job is this game. Just need to quit mine first I guess, so I can spend hundreds of hours theory crafting and experimenting and learning when sometimes a gem that doesn't say it should work 1 way actually works a completely unrelated way, and memorize every unique... Sorry man, I just want to log in and have fun not a second job. |
