XP Loss on Death is so Much Fun!
Bro, No offense but you didn't level a single character past 95. At 97 the torture begins, in Tota I almost grinded one char to 100, but 2 disconnects because of Affliction pre patch had a problem with it.
I can understand anyone who is mourning about it, 99-100 takes so long like level 1-99. So dying because of something what you can't predict or have any control over is incredible frustrating. There is a reason why so many people buy boosting service on TFT or group play abusing to get to 100. |

I solo leveled to 100 this league using one of the most unpopular skill gems and what really got me there was:
1) Rolling maps that I had advantages for and no disadvantages to my build 2) Using omens of amelioration to minimize XP loss where possible, and 3) Not re-entering maps in which I had died |

" "EHP" is misleading as plenty don't treat it as the estimated overall summary and often forget to consider the simple math (if incoming damage exceeds your total healthpool and/or manashield even after mitigation you die). On my tankiest character on the way from 99-100 he died twice. Once was to Hilock on Dune map that was rolled with relatively safe mods (no damage and just magical) and the first hit took about half and my guy died as I tried to react as soon as my hp moved. The other death was during a breach spawn increased by scarabs and atlas. In this case, its generally a matter of the mods that spawn on the rares - while I did a lot of maps like this, and a number got very close to death (despite all the mitigation) the one that did finally get me did it so fast there was no reacting, it was just fine then dead. So I get hating how death works in PoE. If my tankiest character with 90% ele resists,75chaosres, 75/50 block and almost 3kES and almost 5kHP is still finding multiple ways to die, how are more offensive based builds supposed to deal? Hitting level 100 should never really be a primary goal. When the game that inspired PoE basically required doing the same BAAL run grouped (for xp bonus) hundreds of thousands of times, you learn to appreciate alternative paths to 100. With that said, I only have a lvl 100 because he was already 98 and I figured I probably wouldn't be playing much longer so might as well hit it just to know for sure. And I couldn't tell you what I spent those last two points on or noticed the minor stat boost. There was already plenty of misery getting to 98 that I'd already forgotten, 99 and 100 was a lot of unnecessary pain just to feel the satisfaction of hitting 100 and capturing the sense of hitting it in D2 without suffering even worse in that grind. Yep, totally over league play.

Use a regex for rolling maps. Play t16(yep, it sucks but you cannot realistically level up to 100 with those other map mods in the pool, they gonna getcha sooner or later) At least the game feels easy that way. You can even use an Omen once it hurts to lose 10% and justifies the costs of the Omen. Play a tanky hcssf viable build. You can reroll to a degen currency sink glas canon giga dps t17 farmer once you are lvl 100 if u like.
Abyss gives you 2% exp on lvl 99 in a t16 dunes map, so if u avoid rippy mods it is not even that bad of a grind. about 50-60 maps from 99 to 100, i mean cmon. For lower levels the cheap breachstones are good solo. You can even earn some money by doing them with Maven, since you cannot lose exp in the Maven invitation anymore. Hard work but at some point you don't have to worry about exp loss anymore. Last edited by Strickl3r#3809 on Jul 14, 2025, 3:46:17 PM

One thing is 100% sure : XP Loss on Death is my main factor to quit league and play other games.

The omen from ritual cuts the loss to only about 2.5% so that helps a lot. They are very expensive this league so I am not so sure I care to try for 100 this league.

People have complain about this since beta I think. I myself have argue about this for many years. Losing days of progress is BS. There are better way to deal with dying....
Its not changing in the winter stage of POE1. You have better luck asking for Change in POE2. Jon seems rto be more openmind, espcially to feedback from new player. But remember to tell the dev you are a new player, even better you are tell them you are refugee from Diablo. They might listen. |

The xp loss is a punishment and feels awful, sometimes i would rather just lose my whole character. Sunk cost and everything aside it is probs faster to level another toon then sit there trying to level and hating it.
The worst part i find is you can be farming/grinding xp fine for hours then a random death sets you back so far, and generally you have little idea what specifically killed you and why. Or like just before, laggy server killed me and i lost a good few hours xp gain, and GGG refuse to acknowledge the extensive server issues. The xp loss will at some point push me to drop PoE until the next league. |

I think most PoE players have just been playing PoE so long that they can't comprehend that its simply not fun to have to have to have 100% spell suppress, 50k evasion and armor, 6k life, 3k es, a leprechaun's blessing, 6 lucky rabbit feet, immunity to half the games mechanics, the oracles eyes, the one piece, and a map to neverland just to actually play the gd game.
If you just shamelessly copy/paste builds, sure, its great. Goodjob. If you want to actually use abilities and things youre interested in, homebrew, and play it like a normal game – its objectively trash. Its literally a death simulator. All of the best builds just focus on defense and then get all of their damage by cheesing mechanics. The list of objectively obsolete skills is massive, so if a new player happens to be using one they're going to do no damage, so they will invest in damage, so they will die constantly. PoE community is just in profound denial about the baseline experience of the game, and its wild. Nominal gameplay has to be completely without value so that we can have 2 builds that are 2,000,000x stronger than any normal build a typical player would actually create, and its the same 2 builds league after league. Somehow, this is viewed as good. |
