What is journeys end and why did it kill my HC character?
Guys I'm on a single monitor just walking around clearing some mobs. I have the sound turned down because I'm just relaxing.
Then I get a four second timer for a mechanic that explodes my character, after encountering nothing like this in the first 3 and a half acts, or 1000's of hours of ARPG's. I understand how HC works, I have a level 100 HC POE1 character from years ago. I'm learning by playing through, not watching a guide or living in SC until I know the game backwards. I'm aware that I will die at some point, and instantly reroll. If you think this is a good mechanic to be in the game, you are cooked. We go again! " With my first character, I ran like hell as soon as I saw the fuse, and lost all the treasure. Then I said, damn no treasure! And with subsequent characters, I've always opened the rare chest. I thought the mechanic was hilarious. SSF Rise of the Abyssal Ice Strike Invoker, high survivability and fast clear speed. Deprioritize armor and resistances; prioritize crafting a weapon and faster start of ES recharge. Build is shown at level 47, end of Act 3. It tore through Act 3 like butter.

" But didn't you see the two massive fuses burning in an OBVIOUSLY DANGEROUS fashion, especially when coupled with the timer? What are you people looking at when playing the game? You literally were't looking at the screen for at least 5 seconds straight, mate. The fault is yours alone. As you said you were playing blind, so what does it matter that you haven't encountered anything similar in the past acts? Do you expect Act 1 Clearfell to show you every possible mechanic in the game so that you know exactly what to expect till you kill all pinnacles? Encounters like that make the map feel more alive, if anything we need a dozen similar ones every map and not the opposite. |

I'm not playing completely blind, I did a softcore playthrough first. This is a once off mechanic that doesn't appear in the rest of the campaign correct? I saw noting else in the game that is even remotely close. Not in act1, neither act2, nor act3, nor the rest of act4, not the interlude, or even in the limited endgame I have played. Even in trials I have not encountered something similar.
In fact there is a lot of other stuff in the game leading up to this that looks dangerous but is not. In a very recent zone you are walking through a prison that has huge waves of water, that don't seem to impede or effect the character at all. Can it be mitigated? If not, is there any other mechanic in the campaign, or end game, that is not possible to mitigate? If there were a dozen similar things, it would make more sense. The player knows what they are dealing with and learns environment. Last edited by Belegur85#5784 on Sep 24, 2025, 12:32:25 PM

Not trying to be mean, but the other posters aren't wrong.
If u pay attention to the area it's hard to miss that something fishy is going on with the ship. There doesn't have to be a similar encounter anywhere else for people to notice that stuff. It is a bit harsh for HC of course, but by now we all know that GGG doesn't care for HC. The only issue I have with this Quest is that it doesn't explode right when the timer hits 0. I almost ran back to the ship, because I wasn't sure if it was just a joke or something happened offscreen already. At least now u know I guess :) PoE2 0.3 Character: https://poe.ninja/poe2/builds/abyss/character/Sadaukar-2191/Acidic_Sadaukar

it's a test to see if you're greedy.
if you take the chance to loot the boat instead of staying safe you failed the test. EZ |

Some nethack would do good for modern gamers : )
"The poison was deadly. You die." "You've been drowned to a moat by an electric eel. You die." "You are crushed by the crumbling drawbridge. You die." "That was a cockatrice egg. You turn into stone." |

Gimmick meme mechanic. There are a few borderline ones in other parts of the game. In particular the sandstorm on the act2 boss, that is not dangerous after you know the mechanic. Leave it in I guess if that's what players want. Put a bunch of random stuff around that permanently removes characters if you're not concentration on playing the game like operating heavy machinery.
Overall the HC experience throughout the campaign other than these meme mechanics is very well balanced. Last edited by Belegur85#5784 on Sep 24, 2025, 6:37:16 PM
