Empathizing with melee fighters
I don't play melee, and I'm currently doing just fine at the end-game with Lightning Spear. So, this isn't a "I'm getting f*ed by GGG" thread.
I want to understand the design philosophy behind monster modifiers, because 90% of them seem to be designed for killing melee characters, and I really don't understand why the developers have been doing this since the PoE1 beta. If you're playing melee in Abyss League and don't have a huge budget, I really don't understand how you can survive all that dots and other stuff from Abyss monsters. Even I, as someone who is playing a projectile spammer, struggle with this sometimes because of shroud walkers. You can add modifiers like "increased max life" or "cannot die after taking a lethal hit for 4 seconds" but instead you're throwing some broken nemesis stuff in their face. Is this your understanding of fun? Toxicity? So, are we ignoring the fact that these people are trying to have fun in a game, or are we just saying, "Yeah, you know what, they can go play something else" in this case? Neden yaşıyorsun? Melee players are used to dodge and kite a lot. Same with the abyss. There is thoose specific ones with the ground degen effect that i use another skill at range because that's too complicated for me but other players manage to get them out of the degen ground and deal some damage than repeat. Yeah they can be really. Why i dont really bother with it personaly and just use another skill for them.
It's a bit better with the change they made because it deal less damage. On league start it was wild =) I dont know if they're gonna keep that as it is or change it for 0.4. We'll see i guess. SSF player

The only benefit I see to melee is inherent 50%+ stun buildup.
I don't get why Rage is useable by Merc with ranged weapon. I don't get why ranged characters do not take an elemental ailment threshold penalty and/or slightly increased damage when hit by a monsters 3m+ ranged attack. I don't get why powerful monster aura's and chilled ground are some of the only lethal things in this game. Tbf Lightning Spear is more goated than all the available lightning spells. High damage, long range, accurate, fast projectiles, and forking.
Honestly I enjoy the challenge of melee. It's like a secret hard mode. Unless you're using aoe abilities which may as well be ranged, it requires a measure of thought and careful maneuvering to do well as a tru melee toon. It also feels like magic should / is supposed to be superior. It's magicians casting powerful spells, while my warrior is a dude with a hammer. |

ranged being able to avoid the majority of all mechanics by simply attacking from far away makes it incredibly boring to play, at least in my opinion. I remember jonathan talking about how they fixed this issue and ranged generally want to play in melee range anyway and bosses having difficult attack patterns that only activate at range but i have not seen this happen. | |

In all my time playing some of the most popular things over the internet from as far back as the 56k modem era I know for a fact that most players, on a game worthwhile, have little problems towards a personal challenge. "Want to play in melee range", what has spawned this kind of thinking? As far as I'm aware, there's no big team of anaylsts and/or many questionarre's sent towards players or even statements made in general via forum/reddit along the lines of "I like ranged, even tho I play in melee most of the time hehe". There's between 5-10+ years of pretty conclusive hard evidence of a monsterous proportion of internet players on LoL and pluck any of the top FPS games meeting the challenges of strict ranged gameplay. I'll be very disappointed if GGG just say to themselves something along the lines of "we need to make sure we keep to what brought us here in the first place" because I had high hopes for this sequel to be an evolution and something more than just the most beautiful looking space invaders. The theme of PoE2 I like but it really needs to grow a pair, stop the millions of damage builds and always provide meaningful content instead of just band aiding with more maps+stats, otherwise this is just falling again into the pit of an almost niche game genre Vs the multitude of many other things to do online that offer much more competitive and/or proud/cooler/meaningful gameplay excitement. I play melee and the fact that i'm melee isn't what's killing me, it's the frikin COMBOS.
As melee i have to kite and not sit in one place as that's suicide. But melee skills are not like ranged where you can attack while still moving. Melee skills hold you in place while attacking. With WASD movement this shouldn't be an issue as with enough attack speed and movement speed i could still decently kite. But COMBOS force you to sit in place way too long to the point you can't escape one SHOTS. This COMBO CRAP made melee worse then in Poe1. I want to see Jonathan do a melee combo surrounded by Abyss mobs under a temporal bubble. You will literally yell at the monitor "FRIKIN ATTACK!!!" |
