Why I think Leagues die so fast

I play SSF and the league mechanic is unrewarding and unfun and my brand new high end PC freezes more than my old pc. I am honestly pretty demoralized by the game right now.
i had a very long break in between so i had an amazing time playing this season.
i had about a month of absolute enjoyment.

i think any great game has about 1 month ~ 2month life for each individual to fully enjoy.

some play little by little. some play constantly. some just start late in league.

i think last part is important in 3-4month duration league. people who started 2months late into the league still have time to enjoy the content.

i don't think league dies quick. it's just a part of cycle. at some point, your brain needs something new to produce dopamine.
I think it mostly comes down to status quo.

I mean, when there aren't any 'real' META shifts, and every league starts in a "solved state" with no real forms of explorations or challenges and you're just experiencing the same thing over and over again (with a subpar league mechanic on top), leagues will die fast.

To find out why leagues die fast, you have to look at the reasons why people return. People mostly return to experience something new in a fresh environment. When that "new thing" is underwhelming, well...

I think PoE1 is in need of a HARD meta shift or a hard atlas rework. And personally, I think the core drop pool sucks.

Anyhow, playing for a few weeks and taking a break is healthy for you - and the game... Probably...

An expedition league like patch is exactly what the game needs in its current state. It would not only refresh the meta, but also breathe new life into the experience by scaling back player power and making content feel exciting again.

The atlas itself is good, but they could use the template and build something new. They could scrap the Eater, the Exarch and Maven - and add new "influences" to the map device that alter the maps in new, interesting ways. The new Zana/Eagon questline is bad - in every way, and should be scrapped (IMO). It doesn't add anything of value to the game.

And I agree, the agency the atlas provides is awesome and probably one of the main reasons why I can't touch PoE2's endgame with a ten foot pole before it lets me choose what content to run and how to run it. But that freedom is just a smokescreen when the options aren't even close to balanced.

personally i feel its more of a saturation issue.

even in mtg, after existing for years, when the company has introduced 1001 innovative game mechanics, they will eventually end up where the newer mechanics feel similar to older ones.
