Personally I like melee in this game, however the current content does punish melee way harder than Range. It also requires you understand more of the game mechanics than range to be successful. From the perspective of gear, melee is also going to require you know what works and what does not, in a way that ranged classes can ignore. You'll likely also need more specific affix than range clases will.

All melee in general needs life on as much gear as possible. I would aim for life on helm, body, glove and boots at a min. Preferably on every slot but your weapon. You also need max resistance including chaos resistance. Although I've been able to get by with only 60% chaos resistance.

If you're a warrior, you need a shield. It would be difficult to build without it. So if you're using two-handed weapon that means giant's blood is required. Warriors also need "armour applies to elemental damage" on a many slots as they can get them [body, helm, gloves, boots].

if you're not armour based, then you need to care about stun threshold and ailment threshold. Usually passives help here. I've never dedicated item slot to this.

I would try using "Time of Need" at low-mid gear levels. It remove curses and elemental ailments and gives a pretty decent heal. Other wise you can try adding more life regeneration (I haven't built for life regen, don't now how hard that is).

Melee is harder for sure, but if you can get comfortable with it, you'll learn skills that work for every class.

The main issue is that you need a whole build to make a melee build run, you need armor, armor to element, health, elemental resistance, otherwise you will just get killed in less than one second in the middle of a pack. Wich is stupid since that the point of playing melee, to be in the middle of pack. You need so much investing in survivability that you loose a lot of damage compared to range build all that to tank less than a simple ES build.
Melee does feel terrible. There is a big pile of effects around every monster where I can't see whats going on. As a ranged I just stand out of it and cast, with Melee I have to jump into it an pray.

Also the fact that Armor break is a thing that runs rampant, I just randomly lose half my defenses before I know what's happening.
With the way weapon swap works in this game and how versatile tree attributes are, and the fact we can carry around 9 skills, there's not a lot of reason for sitting here talking about "melee vs ranged" in general because it's definitely situationally dependent.

And with all of those things I mentioned, you can shape your character to deal with a multitude of situations - including situations where you would benefit from being ranged vs melee, or vice versa, all on the same character.

If you're gonna make a 1-skill build then ya, you're probably not gonna be as versatile across all the content. There's lots of tools in the toolbox and you're arbitrarily limiting yourself by not using them and then complaining when your one chosen tool is worse than another one in certain situations. Figure it out.

Melee feels terrible for so many reasons. One of the biggest is that every rare mob on every map in endgame has multiple effects that can dmg or slow or poison or drain MELEE (close proximity) SPECIFICALLY. I get into situations where I can't even fight a group if there's more than one rare. It's very obvious why everyone just chooses a bow with maximum dmg over anything else. Melee in no way is worth the extra bs you have to deal with. Also, periodically releases X is more like frequently releases X... it's ALWAYS on the ground.

I truly don't understand how these obvious issues don't stand out to people testing the game. Abyss is at least 10x harder in melee than just shooting a bow into a group. On top of that if you happen to get lucky and find a +6 melee skill weapon you're hurting your own character because a wolf will be able to use 2 attacks before having to resort to swinging wildly with a basic attack and praying. Bows will pierce groups enemies and easily recover all mana to continue prancing along clearing maps. The last and MOST IMPORTANT issue is that as a whole, defenses are terrible in this game. You are much better off staying away from enemies as much as possible because your defensive layers do not work well unless you decide to do 1 of 3 things to maximize your defense which shape the entire build and how you move through the passive tree. Also, you will never convince me that a slow effect on melee doesn't slow the character far more than a slow effect on any other class. Temporal chains, hindering, etc. will turn your attacks into molasses and instantly kill you. LOVE IT....

Overall, it's frustrating to say the least. Guess I'll just go back to finding a different way to use a bow on every character in the game until something drastic changes.

which melee build are you doing? i built 3 melee (smith, titan, wolf) and they are all fine. if you are having trouble fighting mobs or rare with a mace build, i suggest getting a shield. if you are a wolf build just need high damage, some cleave and everything frozne.

My Ice Strike Hollow Palm Pathfinder in 0.3 was a lot of fun too. OP, the issues aren't as "obvious" as you seem to think they are.
