Check: is the campaign too gear dependent?
|
I think it could be a good measuring stick whether it’s possible to complete act 1-2 without gear or by only using starting gear. Not that it should be easy, but if it’s possible. I think that’s comparable with if you can defeat Diablo 2 on normal without gear.
If not, that seems like a good bellwether that the ramp is so steep that it is too gear dependent for new players. In other words: a great player’s skill should reasonably as good as a bad player’s gear. Keen to read some thoughts 👍 Last edited by TheBalrogslayer#7574 on Dec 20, 2025, 7:36:59 PM Last bumped on Dec 21, 2025, 3:09:31 PM

" I don't even get max resist until level 70 to be honest. The campaign can be run on with really junky gear no matter the class. |

Doing A1 without deaths with literally no other gear than a white weapon to use your chosen skills is prolly pushing it a bit, but I imagine it's possible with enough know-how and enough attempts.
But I'm not sure if that's really much of a sign of good or bad gear power design. I think it's really kind of cool that gear has a big impact pretty early on. It makes it more exciting to find new gear and makes you less likely to skip ahead a long time before considering gear updates. I don't really trade until late campaign or so; all my low level gear is thus self-found (well, I might target buy some specific unique if I want to get some specific build to work earlier or if I want to run faster through the campaign to mapping). I usually dump that into the guild stash for others to use. I'm looking at the stuff there now, and there's e.g. an amulet for a level 4 char with +27 life and 3.5 life regen. I remember finding that early on and it felt great. I used it through whole A1. Rare spear for level 6; 49% increased phys damage, adds 4 to 9 phys, +6 str (so +12 life). Level 7 robes with total of 45 ES, +18 life, 1.8 life regen and lightning res. Finding stuff like that is so fun because it has such a tangible effect on your clear and survivability. " ^ this right here. Also a lot of people think every prefix or suffix has to be cracked to be good gear. It doesn't. I've run gear that gave me good resis but did a bunch of other nonsense but it helps. |

Yes, its all rng based, all gear based, not fun

I had this thought yesterday, how much of the poe2 campaign can you do "naked", comparing to PoE1, In PoE1 i am sure you can do the whole campaign "naked" (tabula for gems?).
At the moment it seems like a1-3 arn't gear dependent (gear will make clear times significantly faster), viper is the wall though, she is the gear check for the rest of the campaign (with a slight reliance on a decent build). Last edited by gr0o0ve#1473 on Dec 20, 2025, 10:24:30 PM

" Then why can every class in D2 clear normal without any gear? Because that game has RNG + skill, not only a need for high numbers. " I’d like to see someone beat the Act2 boss with starting gear. I don’t think it’s possible. |

The entire game is too gear reliant, but it really is a problem mainly during the campaign. You just don't really have options to offset bad gear RNG.
Personally, I'd like them to just make the campaign and early maps way more dependent on your passive tree, ascendency nodes and support gem choices. Then, once you reach the higher levels and passive points dry out, that's when gear becomes the biggest source. I also really just wish there were way better options for defenses early on. It's really easy to scale damage, but you're almost forced into semi-glass cannons for a long time. |

" You mean like PoE1... hah |
