Grinding Gear Games could make it so that level 1 characters gets auto deleted after 90 days of not gaining a single level, this would free up some names for people who actually intends to play with that character.

I would be all for this, although some sort of emailed warning would be nice if you reached, say, 30,60 and 85 days of character inactivity.

That said, I know GGG themselves use the name reservation technique as part of their housekeeping, and retain a lot of level 1 chars they never intend to play.
If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

That would just mean people level their characters to level 2.

Which is fine by me again. At least they're showing *some* interest in the names. I think a lot of the locked names are people who tried the game for a bit and never came back.

At any rate, right now, you have to be a bit creative with your naming. Either you do what I do (make shit up constantly) or what a friend of mine does (use a prefix).

Try Google Translate and use different languages. Currently playing Libitinarii. Also known as The Undertaker in Latin.

And use the underscores. They are the spaces. I have retired all of my starting names. Even my personal favorite Sans_Pants.
Shit naming system is shit.

Should of stayed in 1999 when it was invented.
They just need to make names account based. I know they dont want to rework their database, butfrankly it isnt that hard. Acount names are unique. Thats all thats needed. You should not need unique character names.

If things are already impossible in beta it will only get worse.

People like customisation. Thats why we like the skill tree. So it stands to reason we also like other aspects of customisation like being able to pick a name that isnt total gibberish.

I don't really want my account name infront of my characters name or what did you mean?

Some people like me likes the fairy tale story of the game and not just plays it like a sports game.

I agree.

I like Path of Exile so far but the single word naming system is terribly outdated and most certainly restricts character customization.

When you have to sit there for more time than it takes to create your character just to try and think of a reasonable single word (and personally I hate single word naming in a RPG) name to use then that says everything about how horrible the naming system is.

It really does need changing.
First off, people don't like it when you bump a post from two years ago. I was reading the post and got confused because none of it seemed relevant.

Secondly, yes it has somewhat. All names that haven't been used in a year were opened up for grabs. If someone is using your name actively though, you won't be able to steal it from them because you think you deserve it more than them.
Not very creative then are you :)
