Let's talk Chaos Orb Farming

Let's talk Chaos Orb farming.

For those currently unaware, here's the scoop:

Players are stacking high item quantity and rarity, then farming normal zones for rare drops.

These drops are then accumulated and strategically sold in unidentified lots to a vendor for 2 Chaos Orbs, following a well-known vendor recipe.

A brief history of the coverage on streams:

It was mentioned on Nugiyen's stream several days ago that someone had managed to farm an astoundingly large amount of Chaos Orbs within several hours.

It was confirmed by Neonspyder (either by himself, or as second-hand information passed on by someone else in their Mumble) that the method was known, and not considered to be a bug.

It was later mentioned that the information had been passed on to Nugiyen's team, though the method was never revealed while Nugiyen was streaming (the topic was skirted several times).

Just how profitable is this?

Well, according to a Redditor named Asmo54, who happened to see the method in action "on one of their [team member's] streams", the yield was between 4 and 5 chaos orbs per run.

Furthermore, Asmo54 expands that, "when we found out they were doing it we reported it to one of the devs"; Neonspyder responded that "it wasn't going to be changed and he told us that he had shown them how to do it".

Whether or not the method constitutes abuse of an unintended bug in the game mechanics, its efficiency in acquiring currency certainly can't be debated. Given that a developer revealed the information to a select team, I think it's important that everybody else knows about the situation, and is able to efficiently profit from it.

Note:

Despite the apparent condescension of this post, I find no fault in Neonspyder's choice to only reveal the information to a select few players; they are, after all, gaming companions and team members, co-operating in a challenging environment. The only conflict arises if the information was gleaned due to employment status (id est, insider knowledge).

Happy farming!

Who would have thought that stacking IIR and IIQ would lead to earning currency faster.
Yeah, sure. I think that the rarity of jewelry makes this not as efficient as it looks. You'll get tons of everything else before you have 2 rings, 1 amulet and 1 belt.

The point is not quite as obvious as this.

Let's rephrase the question:
Who would have thought that the most efficient way of earning currency for players in the top 10 on the hardcore ladder would be farming Normal mode bosses?
Chris Wilson already posted that it's being changed.

this was a secret?

when i first saw those two chaos orb recipes i instantly thought they are very powerful compared to the rest. maybe it would be a good idea to set a minimum ilvl requirement such that you actually cant use items from normal...on the other hand, ilvl is a hidden property. hm dont know

That's only true if you completely ignore trading. If you farm high level zones and id your rares you might find 1 valuable drop in every 30 (obviously made up number) and sell that for an appropriate price.

Not even considering you won't have a currency penalty while doing so. You would need tons of data to analyze which method is better. I prefer to farm zones where equipment valuable to me can drop. Besides the more they farm the more they devalue the currency they are acquiring. And the recipe has been known for ages.
Different people have different ways of farming orbs. To be honest, I still think farming high level maps, alching high itemlevel items and then selling them if they're good is still the best way to earn orbs, especially since you don't lose exp in the process since you're farming high level maps and some of those items can be worth 1 gcp at least and as much as an exalted at times.

You can farm low level bosses for rares and vendor them for chaos, but because it's low level bosses, you'll be gaining negligible amounts of exp and the amount of chaos orbs you earn within that time-frame is RNG-dependent, ie. based on the number of rings/ammys that drop. Also, is it really worth the time and effort to do low level boss runs when you can possibly get more chaos orbs for less time spent (zero time spent actually, since you're not taking time away from leveling) when you sell a nice high itemlevel item?

It's arguable if it's worth it of course, but with regards to exp, one can look at the ladder and see that other map teams have since overtaken nugi's team, leading me to believe that they are perhaps spending too much time trying to "earn chaos orbs" instead of grinding maps for exp, whereas the other teams have managed to waste less time and grind maps more consistently while managing to sustain their map-rolling currency pool by selling items, leading to them overtaking nugi in the ladder.

I don't understand the part where theyre able to generate multiple rare rings, even stacking the heck of out IIQ/IIR
