Hacked Accounts

Haven't played since April when my account was hacked.

I see that the policy is still the same on stolen items/compromised accounts.

I (and my friends) really liked this game, and was happy to spend money to support it. I would still be playing it.

Let's hope the "integrity" and health of the in-game economy(fueled in part by my stolen goods) is worth it.
I'm going to quote myself from a post I made on the suggestions forum to solve this policy issue, unfortunately the only reply I got back was a rather unconstructive reply from DirkAustin "-1" who clearly isn't a fan of the idea but I still believe this would be a great way to help players / customers of the game to continue playing when there accounts have been compromised.

Soul bound Item Restoration for Hacked Accounts

While I strongly believe in keeping good account security, I would like to propose a suggestion for a partial soft restore, as described below one of the one reasons why no item restoration is currently done is to prevent the in-game economy being flooded with duplicated items.

Unfortunately, we cannot restore any items lost to theft. One of the most important things about Path of Exile is its online economy, and if we performed restorations on demand then the economy would be flooded with duplicated items. We've seen this in other games (where the game companies restore compromised items and create a massive economic problem in the game).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Soul bound Item Restoration for Hacked Accounts

* Character Equipment is restored to a 'Soul Bound' state

Items which are 'Soul Bound' can not be traded, dropped or modified by any Orb (Mirrors, etc)

* Armour + Weapons in stash are also restored but with the 'Soul Bound' flag active

* No Currency or skill gems are restored to prevent any economic impact with duplication

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The idea is very simple (but does require having records of player equipment and restore functionality), by having this process available characters are able to be very quickly restored to a playable state without suffering complete loss of time with an account which has been completely stripped.

While good security is always recommended being pre-emptive against the risks of being hacked, there is also the very real risk that it can happen to nearly everyone very easily and in order to assist players such a process would help to keep them playing and with the value / rarity of high-end items much more important to safe guard.

Another idea may even be to allow players to 'Soul Bind' items themselves in-game (before they ever get hacked) - Effectively removing the items from the game economy but adding some security for the player.

You know what would be funny DirkAustin is if you got hacked and lost all your gear... +1

Yes many players would prefer a full restoration without any 'Soul Bound' status flags but this will never happen in this game for the simple reason that it would create item duplication which is tradeable on the in-game market.

The suggestion simply provides a compromise between getting nothing back at all - as happens now, with getting back at least your character equipment 'Soul Bound' allowing a player to get back into the game after any potential security hack.

Of Course the best solution is just don't get hacked... :D

I strongly believe this policy needs to be reviewed, not only is it good business for GGG to keep customers and maintain their relationship but it helps to counter a very serious issue of security when accounts are hacked maliciously beyond the control of the player.

No.

ScrotieMcB it would be very easy for GGG to see if that happens - They do track item trades to counter any RMT.

The idea can work. It just needs to be implemented / tested.

If you don't have any other ideas for improving on the security policy - It would be far more constructive to support the suggestions made by others or at least offer suggestions on how ideas could be improved on.

That would be feedback worth valuing, a dream come true :D

The ne'er-do-wells will infiltrate the game no matter what. If the game is somehow 100% impervious to item-duping there is still going to be botting...RMT will find a way. The economy will always be tainted. That's why the zero tolerance policy seems extreme.

GGG could come up with a way to make item-restoration very difficult, or at least a waste of time to try and abuse....I would consider even paying REAL MONEY to restore my stuff. I just refuse to start over again.

But devising an item restoration plan directs energy away from game development. So, of course those people unaffected by hackers merrily support the zero-tolerance policy. I get it. I'm just some typed words. I don't exist in your world.

That's fine, I guess, but the alternative is for GGG to lose customers.(I had a lot of friends who played and many more that would.) On a long enough time line that is a lot of disgruntled players lost and a lot of potential revenue squandered, all in the name of pixellated in-game currency.

When your account is hacked, that's exactly what it looks like: you selling all of your items. Then, with this suggestion, asking Support to restore them.

Hello Path of Exile admins.

Two days ago (and yesterday) I have send you an email about that my account was stolen. Somebody from China (I am from Poland) took my password and login and first changed mail address than changed a password. This account is: deathmarti. I had there lvl 68 scion and 2 or 3 more characters. Today I see that somebody is playing on that account and have lvled my scion to lvl 72. I don't like this situation and I want my account back.

I don't care about items on this account. If you cant give me back my account please erase it, because i don't want to see that somebody is playing on my account without my permission.

Please send me an email or pm me on this account. You can check the ip that it changed from Poland ip to some other (I think to china ip).

I was playing very long time on this account and I want to get it back.

With regards (from other account because I cant login to stolen acc)
deathmarti
