Is a SSD mandatory?

It's not mandatory unless you're racing, but it obviously helps (and not just for poe).

Other options - though SSD might be easier/cheaper.

Raid 0

Ramdisk (if you have 24+ GB)

High-end/fast memory stick on USB 3.x port.

Lol. This guy. If load times are the only thing holding a PC back then it's still doing pretty good. When content streaming is so intense in-game that your PC stutters, then it's time for an HDD.

For me with no SSD, POE just locks up for 30 seconds the first time I start it in a day. A bit longer if it's at peak times. Then from there it's smooth sailing.

Why? You don't need it for regular computer use and PoE is the only game that I know of with resource management problems of this level, if you're playing games a good Gpu is much more important than an SSD.

Then you don't know. Regular computer use? What's that? As if gaming were a separate activity lol. You know your OS writes/reads thousands of files any given minute right? It's not like it just sits there idle, grabbing a file or two if you need it lol. Just lol.

You can pick up a 120GB SSD for about $40 USD. That's enough to store your OS on if you're not financially set. You can get a 250GB drive for $60 USD if you feel like you're well off. And you can get a 500GB drive for $120 if you're like caviar rich lol.

It's fine if you can't afford one, no judgement, but to come in here and claim that HDDs are fine and that SSDs are just a lucrative extension is laughable. Your PC is only as a fast as your slowest component. My mom has a Mac mini with a traditional HDD and everything chugs along like it was dipped in molasses. I have SSDs in everything and "regular" computer use is off the charts.

This is why PoE will NEVER be optimized, because a vast chunk of their paying player base still uses WinXP, and has computer specs from 2005. Anyone on modern hardware is basically throwing an anvil, a car, a sledgehammer and a kitchen sink at a fly.

I mean what can GGG do? They can't alienate you guys with your potato PCs and lose half their revenue, so the rest of use with modern computers just sit there like "ya I just bought a mansion but it's just me and I sit in the kitchen all day." lol

I work in IT dealing with multiple servers running multiple databases for hundreds of customers operating 24/7. Guess what's not a "tech standard."

It's a luxury, still. You don't need an SSD to achieve 60 FPS in any game today, period. But people sure do love Windows booting up instantly!!111 (Versus 10 to 30 seconds.) Or shaving off seconds from occasionally large disk read/writes.

Call me when a 1TB SSD doesn't cost as much as a quality video card, or more appropriately, when a performance storage medium is no longer a status symbol for people on forums and is just everyday hardware.
