Item Rarity - a stat no one likes

D3 showed us that Item Rarity (or Magic Find as they called it) is a stat that players generally dislike. I am wondering just how important this stat is in PoE? D3's drop rates were obviously broken; skewed horribly low by the very existence of its Auction Houses. Their Magic Find stat was a horrible band aid that never really fixed things, and the game lost 90% of its playerbase (who logged off in disgust at the pitiful time:reward ratio that the farming in that game delivered).

So why is Magic Find disliked? Very simple....when you build a char and nurture and love it, a huge part of that process is assembling your gear. Your gear is collected and crafted almost as lovingly as your character is. I love my gear. I am very proud of it so far, at least on my mid-60s level main Witch. The problem arises when you reach endgame and enter the infamous "farming" mode; the Maps to you and me. Suddenly you realize that Item Rarity is so damn important, there is little to no point in farming unless you have a massive amount of it on every item that can have it. Suddenly your beloved gear is useless!! In endgame you spend more time farming than you do anything else, so you need farming gear more than you need the gear that got you to the endgame in the first place.

Suddenly, you are starting all over again gear-wise, and items you fell in love with suddenly become burdens worthy of contempt because all they are doing now is reducing your chances of a nice drop. Contributing to your failure. It's their fault you don't get decent drops!

I hate that design, I really do. I want to love my gear and hug it, since I worked so damn hard for it in the first place.

So...how important is Item Rarity (and Quantity) in this game....and does anyone else dislike the design?
Did you know level 91 is the halfway point to level 100? This means that a softcore character dying ONCE at level 85+ can lose many days of progress.

I would remove these stats completely from D3 and PoE aswell and let it all RNG.
Hi,

you make a clear and valid point about the beloved gear-set and the problem with farming in endgame and yeah, I would agree with that, IF it was the one and only way to go... but fortunately it is not.

First off, you can have a massive iiq/iir-gearset in your stash for your character that you use when you farm lower and easier content for maps (fellshrine ie.). While it is true that you will not find any or at least only very little items that are either tradeable for absurd prices (except for some uniques) or could tweak your endgame char, those can be turned in for currency at the vendor. The recipes allow you to create wealth from even the most worthless rares, which will in turn help you to gear your endgame char even further.

Second, you could make a char specifically designed for farming low-lvl content which will even have the chance to drop valuable orbs while farming (in turn for no maps, but maybe you don´t need those) and still having the same advantages as in point 1.

Third, you could use a good iir/iiq-gearset to farm lower maps when you can easily beat higher maps. Therefor you would not need to replace your beloved powerfull items but could still farm in high-lvl content.

So you see, there are ways around the scenario you described. Maybe don´t be too focused on your mainchar, this is no MMORPG so maybe change your habit of playing and your point of view just a little bit and you will see possibilities where there seemed to be none.

best regards

Your gear isn't "useless" - it's keeping you alive and letting you kill monsters to get drops. Sure, farming is less productive if you don't have MF stats, but it's also less productive if you kill slowly, or if you're dead. Using item quantity/quality stats is a risk for players to manage.

And it's not like you don't get drops without these stats, either - surely farming isn't pointless unless you don't get anything. Though I'm not much of a farmer; if I ever reach maps (which I haven't so far), I suspect I'll just start a new character after I try a couple, so I might not have the mindset to understand the problem.

I don't particularly like MF stats as part of the design, never have, but I don't hate them. It adds a bit more variety to the mod pool I guess, but I wouldn't bat an eyelid if they removed them from the game entirely.
i hate magic find. i also dont understand why a game needs this shit.
Just like "reflects damage".
Could be better stat instead, but you got unlucky roll.
I like it a lot - I have it on almost every single piece of my gear, also my minions all run with item rarity.
Stuff drops like candy, 2-3 rares from a champ or uniques from bosses - why shouldn´t I like that?

yeah, and d2 did the exact opposite

building cheap ass magic find blizz sorcs where the way to go when you wanted to build an economy from scratch, and it would be fucked up if there werent any sweet mf pieces to equip

it is a very imporant aspect in a game like this, to be able to build characters for certain purposes, where the item rarity/quantity stat will play a significant role

also remember that orb drops are not affected by this stat (i could be wrong on this, but pretty sure), so its not like youre left without anything (in comparison to those with ability to stack item r/q)

what d3 showed us is that blizzard fucked up the drop/roll/itemization mechanics completely, and that kids today dont like to make choices of their own (should i wear X and kill at 100% capacity or should i wear Y and be x% slower, but with x% higher chance of finding Z?)

please dont ask them to dumb down the game
I stick to the thing i learned in D2 - no MF at all. Its better to clear instance 3 times with no magic find mods, then to do it once but with 200% iir. And game is also way more enjoyable.

Also, currency drops dont depend on your iir (iiq maybe).
i am also a mf hater. yesterday i bought an awesome shoe
, made it 4L and showed it to my friend. he simply said: not good, no mf.
