Tencent has Invested in Grinding Gear Games

I've always supported POE because I love the way the F2P business model has been implemented, and have always enjoyed the content produced by GGG.

Chris and the team have always come good in the past, and I would like to believe that they have made this decision because they believe it will be best for the game. Let's hope it works out that way.

While I must say I was quite shocked by the news, and initially upset, feeling that we've been sold out. I've calmed down a little now and I'm prepared to give GGG the benefit of the doubt.

If the business model does remain unchanged, and GGG continues to produce interesting content in the same spirit, then I may well continue to support in the future...

China should be glassed.
Welcome to capitalism.

We are important. We are the players. The ones who support the game. Take a look at the badges I have. Then look at your own. If anyone is unimportant it's you. You haven't supported the game. I have and I am pissed.

Oh, and no, I will not be playing again.
So if I get this straight, you guys @GGG are just the same kind of freeloader like all the other parasites out there.
So you tell us shit for years, take our money and then you sell your FUC**** company to the Chinese? Seriously, screw you guys!
No matter if it's your company or not, you gave your Community a promise and now you broke it out of what? Profit?
I spend alot of Money to PoE on 2 different Accounts and right now I feel like the biggest Idiot out their. Betrayal doesn't feel good.

Wish you all the worse in the future, fucking capitalists!

Colors of the Community 101.

No, this is truly laughable:

1. "I no longer like this game"
2. "The game I like is going to ruin"
3. "Why did you do this?"

How can you claim 2 right after saying in 1 that you DON'T like the game anymore?
And why would you care about 3? You said you hate/uninstalled/whatever. You said you left the game - what business is it of yours the direction the game/company is headed without you? To use a quote from Portal 2: Box. Your stuff. Out the front door. Parking lot. Car. Goodbye.

Go find another game to spend your time and money on if you ACTUALLY feel PoE is undeserving of it going forward. Otherwise it's just some sort of "look at how I pretend to care about the game". If you care - you stay with it. If you don't - you find something else to care for. Simple as that. Having to post "I quit" is like having to announce in Global Chat that you Ignored someone. It's called "attention whoring".
I'm calling bull on all the people saying "uninstalling" right now. You know you're going to keep playing the game until the changes you don't want to see start happening. I for one will be playing this game and continuing to support the developers until PoE closes down or a big enough change is distasteful enough for me to stop playing it, however long that'll be, whether it's 3 months from now or 10 years from now. I personally hope PoE is still going strong over a decade later like WoW is.
Oh my... this is troubling news indeed.

I'd say I appreciate the transparency, but I feel like we've been deliberately left in the dark on this. I don't blame them for it, the impact of this news will ripple for years to come, but it seems many of the loyal supporters are feeling betrayed.

Chris is probably right in that Tencent will not step in and take control of the game outside of China, they rarely do. But they care about one thing and one thing only, money. Plainly put, if PoE doesn't make enough money, they'll have no choice but to step in and try to "make something of it". Just one look at PoE China will tell you exactly what that means... -shudder-

My fear is that if the majority of people lose faith in the future of GGG and the game and stop supporting it, the money won't appease Tencent and the above theoretic scenario comes closer and closer to being reality. In essence, this decision has placed the fate of PoE in the hands of its supporter more so than ever before. (if I'm right)

Personally, I trust Chris and the team and I will support them regardless. I love the game, always have and I've never had a more amazing experience with a development team than I've had in the last 5 years with GGG. Thank you so much!

Having said that though... for the first time since PoE launch, I'm afraid.

Because we are invested in the game, both emotionally and financially. And without us the cmpany doesn't go anywhere. We are the reason that they exist.

Oh, I will find another game. Wolcen looks promising, but I do worry that they may never actually reach release. And there are a few other games I currently play that will keep me occupied.

We do care about it, but you don't stay on a sinking ship. You get in the lifeboat.

This is a thread about a company buyout (not an investment when it's 80% shares) and the people who have supported the game for years and are essentially share holders themselves as they are the ones that invested in the company via supporter packs and should be pissed when the game goes in a direction they are not happy with.

To say that they are just whoring attention is like saying employees shouldn't be allowed to voice their discontent when a company sells itself to a competitor who will just shut down their plant.
Wow... Been a while since I've waded into a forum and I can see why now. Anyway, here's replies to the comments on page 14 only;

"
it is not investment at all.
Tencent just bought GGG.
What to prevent their influence to Path of Exile?
Their meaningfulness "promises".

It is an investment.
Tencent does not own GGG, rather a controlling interest.
Well, what's worse; 1. GGG making meaningful promises, or 2. Bitching and moaning before any wrong-doing has occured?

"
What i don't understand is - why sell majority stake?

Even selling 30%-40% stake would be tens of millions of dollars - enough to fund the development for at least a decade.

Now you are pretty much forced to obey every decision Tencent makes.

And anyone who purchases MTX / Supporter packs from now on is actually supporting Tencent instead of Grinding Gear Games.

In the real world, people can't pay for rent with hopes and dreams. So, business owners sell part of their company to make money in exchange for the work they have done (typically 12-16 hours days for entrepreneurs)... truly a shameful practice!

how do you know that 30-40% is tens of millions? is GGG a publicly listed company (i.e. are their profits public information)? Do you have any idea what you're talking about? clearly not...

GGG have clearly stated that they are not going to be influenced by Tencent. Why complain when something hasn't yet happened; it may happen, it may not.

Actually, the MTX/Supporter packages still go to GGG, but the profits are shared based on the company's shares in POE. Some to the GGG people, some to Tencent... again, too much doom and gloom from some childish keyboard warrior.

"
I bought supporter packs because I liked to support GGG as an independent developer. I liked to believe that my money was going directly into keeping the lights on in the studio. Now that GGG is under the auspices of Tencent, I see it as their responsibility to keep GGG running, not mine anymore. Will I keep playing Path of Exile? More than likely. Will I keep paying for supporter packs? Probably not.

The question I have for GGG is this:

"What can you do with Tencent's money that you couldn't do with mine?"

Its a serious question that deserves a serious answer.

Will this buyout enable GGG to do something that it couldn't do before? If so, I wish you all the luck in the world. If this is about satisfying shareholders, or securing your retirements, I'm dissapointed, but I understand.

Please GGG, give us a tangible reason to be happy for this buyout.

The money was and still is. Just because a business takes part of the money, does not mean that GGG receives nothing. It does, however, now mean that if we stop supporting GGG, Tencent may try to bin the project... food for thought

Well <person>, Tencent has a lot more money than you (presumably). Are you a large corporate business with billions to invest in marketing, development and growth/promotion of a product? probably not. <<< There's your serious answer

You want a tangible reason to be happy for a team of developers who have (hopefully) just secured their retirement in exchange for hundreds of hours of video game enjoyment? Or, how about the game developers who succeeded in a grossly saturated market when hundreds/thousands of other businesses failed? Or, how about GGG taking a smart step forward and realising that they needed to secure additional investment to grow and develop their game so that it does not stagnate? Crazy concepts really

Less tin-hat nonsense people. Businesses are not all evil...
