Blackjaw is a garbage boss, one shot mechanics shouldn't exist in any game.

Killed him 2nd try... I honestly had more trouble with monkey (that one took like 15). Go to a corner and circle around, the moment he breathes fire on the ground run the opposite corner, fire wont reach you.

For the Silverback Gorilla I found standing just literally point blank next to him, attack, then roll behind was key. He only ever did his easy to dodge, low AOE attack for whatever reason (I'm a ranged char, but a lot of melee bosses can be cheesed like this I'm finding).

It's actually exactly the same for blackjaw, but you do have to run away for a few of his attacks. I think some of these guys' AI could use a bit of work because that feels cheesy. They need to be able to detect "hey, player is just running around me in a tight circle! Charge a slam next" or something like that.

Spoiler

This guy, right? I'll just re-post my own reply, from after I figured it out:

You have to basically hug his feet and circle strafe him to not get hit. Every attack clips you if you don't. Got him first try by hugging his feet. Still, that is not intuitive and the hitboxes are super deceptive. That is not good design.

I'm a noob playing ranger with dumbass passivetree build that doesn't really connect to my items that much.
This was one of the easiest bosses so far. You just stand in his face and roll into him to dodge.
Only time you get away from him is when he's spitting flame on his axe(which is a very slow animation).
For melee classes this guy is probably even easier.

I googled him(and found this thread) after the first death against him. Because this was the first boss that I see deal damage through dodgerolls with every single ability.
lol you guys are dying to that thing? took me 10 seconds with my nader
"buff grenades"

I don't think I've progressed as far as you have so I don't know if Blackjaw is overtuned.

I will disagree though as "dodge-or-die" [DoD] mechanics are very popular and many people seem to enjoy them.

I'm in your camp though in terms of the game I'm looking for. I'd like something similar to a D2 experience where, for the most part, you won't get one shot but you can still get killed if you bite off more than you can chew.

As opposed to "artificial" (?) difficulty injected by DoD I'd prefer that just the basic good old combat is the challenge where the mix of spell casters, melee, ranged, and abilities that all "blue" or higher monsters can routinely have is what makes the game hard.

Think of it as preferring death by a thousand cuts as opposed to -- well I mistimed my dodge roll didn't I :)

Dodge or die mechanics are popular based on style of game and what it offers players as options.

Monster hunter world has a ton of one shot mechanics
but every mechanic except one boss is fair.

The only unfair one is ann optional superboss that requires specfic elemental equipment or you just die.

Keyword being fair.

Player shouldnt be body blocked and have enough time to dodge

This is the first boss I hit that I'll say is actively bullshit. The hitboxes absolutely do not reflect the visuals for like half his attacks - they're like 2x larger.

Yeah, the hit boxes were absolutely awful. I died two times in a row to his combo after being meters away from the last swing, and in the end I just ran away as soon as he did it

And this is the problem with doing DS-style bosses with a ping and desync. You don't know wtf hit you in the end and it just ends up feeling janky af
Ninja.

Agreed. This is the ONLY boss i completely skipped after failing for like 50 times. Melee and Ranged likewise. Fuck it.
I can't disagree with you more.

Having the constant threat of death as you play the game is far more stimulating than having a mindless button masher. It keeps you alert, engaged and immersed in the game and challenges you to SOLVE PROBLEMS.

Not worrying about getting 1 shotted or just genked at any moment makes a game so boooooring and non memorable.

The problem is not the challenge but the (obviously) broken hitboxes on that boss. It kills you even if you are VISIBLE out of the danger zone. It kills you even when you dodge and attack. Thats the problem.
Yeah, that's the only standard "non random" boss that I thought was ridiculous. I dodged every single of his attacks, yet kept dying and dying despite clearly being out of "bad stuff".

A quick search on the Internet showed nothing odd about a glitch/bug with that boss, but that was a few days ago:

I thought there was something odd/wonky with my dodge roll timing (persistent lag or something like that), but when the same thing happened on Cruel difficulty, I knew something was odd. As someone pointed out, his hitboxes are wrong for some reason: it's probably a bug.
