Isn't respeccing way too cheap right now?

It's early access where everyone, even the people that usually make the meta-defining builds, are learning how the game works. The game can also change a lot from patch to patch as GGG tune everything. It should be cheap right now. I fully expect them to bump up the cost when everything gets more locked in to a final state.

I'm probably not going to make myself popular with this post, but I feel that respeccing is way too cheap.

I'm lvl 85 right now, and I could respec my entire character 10 times over and still have some gold left. I like semi-permanent choices (that's why I'm against changing ascendancy), it forces me to think about those choices.

Personally I like the system in Grim Dawn. Every time you respec it gets more expensive. So the first one might be 1000 gold, but the 100th time you respec it will cost you 100.000 gold. This should give you enough flexibility to experiment and make mistakes, but it will probably cost too much to respec your entire character.

Should be free, actually.

Gating your ability to change your build in a PVE game is pointless. D4 has gone to an armory with zero cost for respecs. If Bliz of all developers can figure that out then GGG has no excuse.

And that's the reason I don't like D4 (or D3). Making any build feels completely useless with free respec. If PoE has free respec I will instantly stop playing.

Again; cheap respecs are a way to increase build diversity, not restrict it.

If respeccing is cheap, the opportunity cost for trying things that might not work is lower. If respeccing is expensive or impossible, nobody that doesn't have unlimited time strays from the meta because the opportunity cost is too high. If you can't respec, the only logical thing to do is to play the exact thing that you know for a fact works, because you can't change your mind if it doesn't.

If respecs are cheap and people are all aggregating toward a meta anyway, the reason is not because respecs are cheap - it's because balance is too far from neutral.

Your understanding of the cost and benefit of low respec cost is literally the opposite of the reality. That's fine, you do you; just don't pretend it's for a good reason.
