Path of Exile has always had a death penalty. It's part of its identity. Some people like it, some people don't. It's not going to change because some people don't like it. In Path of Exile Land, Hardcore means your character can only die once, and League is what you wish Hardcore was. It's just that those modes are one level more extreme than you're used to/wish. There is no Softcore in Path of Exile.
If they won't get rid of it then they need to fix defense and monster scaling. Having a 10% XP penalty with no option to recover during EA when there's a ton of balancing issues is chasing people away.
If they were smart, they would understand this and either rid the XP penalty, give an option to recover after death, or just penalize XP from the current map until they have a polished product at which point they can revert back.

Wrong. At t15s you're getting way more per map than 4ex without juicing, and this is assuming that you have such a bad build that you're dying at least once per map.
At level 95 that 2.5% is roughly two breaches of a decently juiced map (add the lowest deli instill and voilá, you're instantly rewarded with about 10ex in splinters, that's two and a half omens for almost free).
Wrong twice, Elden ring is not an ARPG so you're comparing apples and screwdrivers, but let's say the comparison is feasible, you're not guaranteed to get your XP back in Elden Ring, while PoE2's pause button is guaranteed, and so is carrying an omen for a completely negligible cost.
(You also don't actually need exp in Elden Ring to clear the game, while an ARPG progression is tied to it and is also one of the factors supposed to limit you from progressing for free, you're supposed to evaluate what's keeping you from progressing, this is why you cannot compare different genres. In Elden ring you can always progress for free, there's actually MORE handholding in Elden Ring in that aspect.)
(Also Elden Ring allows for infinite safe XP farms at any point in the game)

Never said I was dying once per map. I never said I was guaranteed to get my XP back in Elden Ring, I literally said I have the option. About the only time I'm guaranteed to lose it is a boss room if I choose to fight one beyond my level. The fact it's not an ARPG is irrelevant, just another excuse you can use, it boils down to my time.
Yeah, people who are God players can clear Elden Ring without XP, 99% of the player base needs to level up. I do need to XP to get good gear that allows me to take on harder content.
Regardless, that's a game with much less hand holding and more challenge and I'm having more fun. Claiming I need hand holding is just a pathetic attempt to diminish my opinion while trying to puff up your chest about how much of a great gamer you are. It's really just sad and snobby.

It's not about how good I hypothetically am, it's how you're refusing to get better with simple changes.
I also feel like I must reiterate that elden ring allows you infinite safe XP. That IS handholding like it or not. (and it's still a really bad comparison)
See you feel like you should be rewarded in X amount for your time, in the same sort of "feel" for two completely different games and genres. It is not the same. I'm not supposed to progress equally or have the same friction in a a megaman sidescroller vs a MMORPG.
I get that you feel like I said that you're dying once per map, maybe I need to explain basic hyperbole to you, this was HYPOTHETICALLY ASSUMING you die once per map, even then you can break even in progress if you're using the tools available to you. It is not the game's fault that you choose to intentionally gimp yourself due to stubbornness and feeling like this should behave like a different genre.
Is it more clear now? do a map, buy 10 omens for the day. Go die as often as you like and you'll still progress.
