I think you should be able to see them if you want to (option enebled). Having the dammage and health bar showing i great to know how much dammage you do. I'd like to know how much dammage I do on Brutus with my lvl5 Firball and 104 Int. It helps to calculate your progress.

I think it's a big yes, all those stats (enemy Health, dammage dealt to enemies & dmg receive by player) should be in the options menu for hte player to decide.
I do not like the idea knowing exactly how much hp people have. It will make me stay in combat for too long because I know i can take one more hit and he cannot (and I will deal min damage and he crits...). It is too tempting. Do not get me wrong. Knowing the strength of npcs would be awesome. But checking the stats in town would be less dangerous.
Sorry for the long post. In the unlikely event of a short post. There sure is something I should feel sorry about anyway.
I consider a small hp colored bar above head to be more important than Hp values.

You could trigger green colored ones for friendlies, red for foes and it would make it easier to discern mobs around you, specially in some dark caves where it all 'blends' in visually, making it hard to discern friend from foe from you.

The numeric values however, are not that important. Irrelevant really.
A customizable set of options would be the best solution by far. Damage dealt, damage received, damage healed, monster hp, player hp should all an option you can tick off.

The only thing that would really need to happen is an addition of a player and monster health bar above the heads of both. It's very tricky to distinguish players from enemies and even monsters.
I don't believe any kind of visual numerical feedback during a combat is currently needed.

While I understand the joy created by observing high numbers, it can also create serious immersion breaking to the point where you wouldn't be fighting that_huge_ass_skeleton, but rather his numbers.

Also certain degree of mystery is brought when you don't see the numbers behind.
Please never ever think about cluttering the options page. Options are good.

I voted wrong. Voted yes, but wanted to vote "only if enabled in the options".

edit : I am also a big fan of damage numbers ( yes, d3 style, actualy I think they got that aspect just right).

People who say they want to see the numbers will not stop until there are full-blown real-time meters for everything (not just damage) available.

The reason for this is that we've been trained through various games to expect that the in-game tooltips for abilities are often wrong.

Yeah, I know... just stating the obvious.

I don't care much either way, as long as I can turn it off when I want. ;)

If enabled by the player in options, yes.

Sorry, didn't see the 3rd option when I voted, so I voted yes. :D

I would want the numbers, just because I like to be calculated. I even keep my HP numbers on all the time. It isn't needed for normal monsters, but there should be an option to enable them for magic, rare, and unique monsters.
