tbh Path of Exile is a giant noob trap. Technically.

Can already think of one weird inefficient combination with Vortex Cyclone - Mines.

How are people making all these judgments when they can't even use the gems yet? It's all grounded in belief right now.

It's all grounded in logic:

A number of Vaal skills have been shown to be sweepers.

There are adequate sweepers in the game already. Split Arrow (and its variants, such as GMP Lightning Arrow) covers the entire damn screen already.

When you have two things, one will always be better than the other. If they're better, since trash monsters basically disintegrate when you look cross-eyed at them, any increase in offensive power will go largely unappreciated. If they're worse, then they're just worse.

Ergo, raw efficient damage won't be their appeal. And it probably shouldn't be. The offensive ones can appeal to Timmy, while the defensive ones, if they're decent, can appeal to Spike.

I personally probably won't be spending a 4L on one. Even if it could fit, there aren't enough skill keys as is.

Or storage space. Good lord. They're crafty, soaking us with them storage panels by adding more gems and items into the game.

but if theyre powerful enough that using them effectively doesnt require links..

Every example so far has used linked versions. If they did not require linked versions to be powerful why demonstrate them that way?

It has been discussed that if they do turn out to be powerful without links then fine, except, just how powerful are they going to be when linked then? Links scale damage very strongly (and utility); so if an unlinked vaal gem is able to wipe out a screen of monsters in one use (otherwise, what is the point?), what would a linked vaal gem do to say rares? Will every rare just become "Oh, rare", use vaal gem, carry on?

This can be averted by making them powerful without links AND making them un-linkable.

However, at the moment, the evidence is that the vaal gems are only powerful (relative) when linked - like any other damage gem. Which brings us back to the original question; where are we going to find the space for another damage-link-setup?

I was thinking about the same, then saw this thread so i will post here my thoughts ( sorry for bad english).

I guess this gems could not be use with coc or cwdt cuz they will be op.

I also find this gems not interesting cuz of the souls mechanics. The only way i see them working is if GGG adds some clusters for vaal gems that decreases the numbers of souls consumed or that increase the charges u can keep up. This way u can plan a build around this clusters and vaal gems.

I dont see this gems replacing old ones because in games like PoE is all about spamming habilities, u cant have some skill with cooldowns other than utility ones.

I don't think that servers will like the insane Aoe skills.I think there will be way more desync than before.
Just a reminder.

We need a few game elements to favour smaller groups and solo play.

A few. Don't you mean one? YAY! We get Vaal Skills. WE NEED NO MORE!!!

Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.
"I told you so."
90% of skills are basically a giant noob trap.
Most of the gems suck. The only expections I can think of are.

detonate dead -- for that unique crypt map
fireball -- if combined with trap on stationary targets (still not that good)
cyclone -- can be good for some builds maybe, like RF.
