I'll chime in and say I thought the Detonate Dead looked really damn cool, but again.. even rare monsters usually just burn down in the matter of a second or two anyway.

On the other hand, burning down a lot of corpses around a boss and then blowing them all up would be very entertaining. That seems like it would be pretty situational though.
No one knows yet really though. There is plenty chance that there will be strong single target 'assassin' skills as well.

It could just be that they chose to show off those couple AoE skills, because they are probably much more graphically cool looking than a single target.

I think it would be cooler to put it with trap and pierce for a super bomb type effect.
First of all, there might be vaal gems that are single target attack instead of their AOE counterpart, which would be awesome, but I have no source, it's just an idea. But secondly, vaal gems being a noobtrap isnt bad at all. I have calculated my links for the next char already and still want to include a vaal gem somewhere, losing survivability. Not because it is minmaxed, but because its awesome to have it. People asked for it because they want flashy stuff and their big moments in partyplay where they have the spotlight. So what's basically a giant noob trap for you might be additional fun for others. Most of the players are more the casual type. They come from work and want to slaughter some mobs. Doing that with 360° fireball fisting might be more appealing to them than stopping the clock after each map and recalculating their time effectiveness.
However I still doubt that these vaal gems can't be implemented in minmaxing clearspeed. If you solo invasion and wait for your activation until you encounter a problem or the unique bosses or later mapbosses, those gems might accelerate ur mapspeed. Take alone the (to be nerfed) spark from the video. That's a free room clear. Good bye Jungley valley weaver f.e.

I would have loved if these skills had a "activate button" aka spam normal linked spel then press button when you have the charges, for a focused blast. This would have greatly increased there potential in the endgame dungeons imo. But still this is all assuming we cant manage to hold a 4-link for vaal skills and if they are worth that 4-link investment.

i havent so far seen any evidence that the skill wont work like normal when its not charged.

Can it not be like a normal one and then proc when there are sufficient souls?
