You need to have one of the atlas trees set for gold farm, and have a set of scarabs for that.
Also yes, 1 mil is a min to start hiring mappers to set'em on red maps. But better 2+ mil.

Get IIQ at 320% you can make 50K-100k per t17 easy. farmed over 7million in 5 hours this league. Best atlas i found is giga rogue exiles for gold.

or use use magic packs + packsize + domination + 3 scarabs of plenty with blue/red boys if exiles are too hard. A little less gold, but still 30k+ per t16 without any fancy shit

Ye, this is the way. Grabbing every piece of map mod effect along the way to boost IIR and Pack Size further helps a ton as well

I tried various strategies this league, for my build at least, best gold generator (max gold/hour) is Vaal, Alch & Go with Twist of Fate (10k-30k gold, 2-3 min per map).

The strategies with Rituals, 13 mod maps, Titanic Scarabs, Beyond, Apparition Shrines, etc are generating a lot of gold and unique items per map, but takes longer to complete the map (30k-80k gold per map, 5-8 min per map for me). With gold, these strategies are generating a lot more unique items you want to pick up for disenchanting. Also these maps are more dangerous, deaths add quite a bit to map clear time.
honestly i think gold is fine for the most part. the problem is that quality rerolls cost 22k per turn and to find rank 10 or even rank 9 workers people need to roll many times. yesterday i burnt through like 500k gold and didnt even find a single rank 10 mapper. this is what eats peoples gold and should be addressed.

Yup! Early league, when you need lvl 10 everything, it's ok.
But when you have Miners/Farmers/Disenchanters/Smelters all lvl 10, you get a lot of "empty" rerolls when you want to replace a mapper or a sailor.

The problem is NOT that there isn't enough gold in maps the problem is that you can't get gold at all or only very little when you want to play other strats like simulacrums, breachstones, blighted maps, Alva and the list goes on and on.
