Frequent crash to desktop; Event viewer points to KERNELBASE.dll as faulting module (Windows 10)

Hello,

Like some others, I've been having a problem with the Path of Exile client crashing quite frequently in recent times.

I will attempt to provide as much relevant information as possible, with the hope that it helps either fellow players or developers in determining the root cause and finding a solution.

Describing the nature of the crash

• Client hangs momentarily during gameplay and crashes to desktop

• No error message is shown (in-game or by the OS) before or after crashing

• No particular gameplay action seems to correlate with crashing:
 • It happens while in town, in hideout, during mapping and in boss zones
 • As far as I can tell it does not happen while the client isn't in focus (e.g. tabbed out)
 • It may happen when issuing a character move action (left-clicking to move), but I'm unsure because we're almost always moving

• Crashing seems to be unaffected by how long the client's been open - I had some crashes several minutes in, others several hours in

• Crashes have been rising in frequency for me lately; I'm not confident enough to point to a particular patch, but Windows' event viewer tracks 19 of them across the past week (all 19 are indeed versions of the same PathOfExile.exe crash):

Things I tried

Not much. I've updated my GPU drivers, done a system reboot, and that's it.

I'm led to believe that this issue affects a very small percentage of setups and ultimately will need to be fixed in the game client, so I hope that reports like this can help advance that.

PC specs

I'm running Windows 10 Education (version 22H2; OS build 19045.5131). I play Path of Exile with the standalone client.

Exporting my hardware info with the NVIDIA app, but if there's a more preferable way to share this please let me know:

Crash details from Event Viewer

In order to provide a comprehensive level of detail, I will list several entries from the aforementioned Application Error category.

Many of the crashes (18 out of 19 in the past week) point to KERNELBASE.dll (which is part of the OS) as the faulting module causing the application to crash. Some samples attached:

Going back past the 19 crashes from the past week, I spotted a few other instances of crashes that fault previous versions of KERNELBASE.dll (presumably from past OS updates). Some examples include:

Conclusion

Thank you for taking the time to review my report. I hope it's helpful, and I'm very keen to provide more relevant information from other sources if needed. Please let me know if I can assist in any way.

Cheers!

i have the same issue... its always KERNELBASE.DLL but i have no solution :-(. My Hope the coding from poe II is completly different....
Same, KERNELBASE.dll has crashed the game 6 times in the last 24 hours and 17 times in the past week.
I'm also getting this a lot, starting this past week. Upwards of 15 crashes in the past hour. It seems to be better running lower level maps. Windows Event Viewer shows the same KERNELBASE.dll, but also a libcef.dll on a much smaller number of errors.

I'm running the same NVIDIA driver as OP, Game Ready Driver 566.14.

Edit: Downgrading NVIDIA driver to the previous version seemed to work. No crashes today.

Also seeing similar issues on a fresh install of Windows 11 23H2 (in case this was somehow related to the 24H2 issues, which it seems not) and nVidia Game Ready 566.14 Driver.

Prior to clean installing Windows earlier today was having the same problem on nvidia 566.14 drivers and hard system locks that required powering off and restarting to correct on 561.09 drivers.

The game has been crashing like this since the Necro Settlers update for me.
Check your Nvidia App and turn off any RTX features, then report back. Also, please share your exact power supply model, as it could be a problem with power delivery. You have a 3080; the higher 30-series cards experience high transient spikes, which can lead to instability or downright system failure (kernel-power errors). I had a 3080 in the past myself.

Thank you for the advice. The only feature I'm using from Nvidia App is ShadowPlay (game recording), but I consider it necessary. Turning it off would not be an acceptable solution.

My power supply is a ROG-STRIX-1000G. It could be a more general problem with power delivery, but so far it manifests itself only when playing Path of Exile and not any other games.

This has also not been an issue in the past - it started happening often only in the past couple of weeks or so, which makes me believe it's more likely software-originated.

You could try two command line tools from Microsoft to repair Windows.
Dism.exe
sfc /scannow

Thank you for the advice. According to this tool my OS is fine - no integrity violations were found.

I have also been chasing this error for months. Performed clean install, updated literally every driver through device manger, chipset drivers, bios updated, permission issues on folders, Memtest86 on RAM, and nothing works. Tried other games and no issues after days of gaming. Seems to be no rhyme or reason and can happen while mapping or just sitting idle in your hideout. I have a 5800x3D with a RTX 3090, and I am really really hoping this does not happen with POE2.
