Are ascendancies mandatory for endgame?

Haven't looked that far into things. I doubt I'll even be interested in doing later level maps. With the current mapping system I don't see a point in progressing through them.

If 0 ascendancy can carry me through the campaign and early mapping, I say this is good enough for me. I'm barely at the end of Act 2. Maybe till I get to mapping the third ascendancy will be released. )))
The ascendancy options are indeed frequently meh, and you have to decide so early (I also just left the trial without deciding).
Which might be good, less excessive power, more exploring unusual avenues.
Though infernalist allows you an extra summon, that's about as minion as ascendancies get.

I picked Witch for my first character because I like the chaos/curses/minions gameplay. I got now to the first ascendancy and I don't like either option.

Blood Mage sounds very risky and Infernalist means I need to spec into elemental damage.

Will I be able to progress through the game (endgame) without an ascendancy?

No, you will not. Someone who knows what they are doing would be able to. But you will most certainly fail. Sorry for the harsh truth.

How do I know? Because you lack the comprehension and game understanding to read the Infernalist class and figure out that you don't need to spec into elemental damage to play this class. In fact, it is the premier option for minion gameplay. You can pick up the Loyal Hellhound which is an amazing utility minion that will make you tankier as well. Then take Altered flesh and any of the two Beidat nodes that are useful to you: Will for minions, Gaze for Mind over Matter or Hand for ES.

Or you can play Demonform and be a generic caster. There is nothing in Demonform that makes it exclusively an elemental caster.

Your problem is that you read "Infernalist", look at the art with the fire, and assume this is an elemental caster. Welcome to PoE. You will need to learn to read.
Still waiting for GGG to admit that they made mistakes and actually work on fixing them.

You'll find me when pigs start flying.

You insight is very valuable, but you phrased it so well, that now I don't want to pick either option even more. This is the exact attitude that turned me away from PoE 1.

I guess I will stumble my way through the game until I figure out what I'm doing or I find this "read" skill gem you mention.
So I would agree with Primordial, you absolutely do want your ascendency's to reach end game, especially as a new player that doesn't have the pre-requisite knowledge/in-depth understanding of how to build classes in PoE. I'm in the same boat where I am learning everything as this is my first deep dive into either PoE game.

I played minion arsonist infernalist and while it's fun, I don't typically play minion builds so I re-rolled Sorc and have been playing that as a force lightning, darth sideous type build in the meantime. I'll save minion for when I want to play an afk wall build lol.

I will say that using infernalist for minions is absolutely one of, if not the most tanky caster build you can do, and is well worth building into. It doesn't require using elemental damage, although you can take flame wall with raging spirits for extra minions. I liked using Detonate Dead to blow up all the corpses for big chonky dmg.

I'm hearing the rumor mill has been saying the 3rd ascendency option for Witch will be Chaos ascendency and that one sounds the most fun to me, as I enjoy the chaos dot (damage over time).

Not sure when Chaos ascendency gets released but it shouldn't be too far off. I hear people have been having fun with Deadeye Ranger and Witchhunter Merc. And Deadeye is probably a bit more beginner friendly. That's what my guild leader runs and he clears low tier maps in end game no problem.

I'm not saying Primordial is wrong, I think he is very much is right, he just provided his feedback in a patronizing/dismissive way. ))

I currently use minions mostly as a decoy and doing damage from afar using chaos spells and curses. If the third ascendancy is focused around Chaos then I'll definitely wait for that, since the choice seems to be permanent. Might try a different class, while I wait, if I indeed hit a wall.
