and to extend on that:
It encourages to look up (Boss-)guides (even more than people already do), it funnels players into Meta Builds (and they will trend even more to those screenwide one-shot BS than they already do) and it gives not a feeling of [righteous] punishment and learning but of .. regression.
All of which is terrible game design, no matter your stance on harder or punishing content.

This is going to stop being "fun" sooner rather than later, even for those "elitists". Wether they admit it or not.

So, to reiterate:

I cannot imagine what it is like in the mind of someone who finds themselves frequently dying but failing to conclude that they need to change/improve/become stronger.

It's like some people are incapable of learning!
If you bite into your food and it's too hot and you burn your mouth a normal person will wait for it to cool down. These bizarre individuals complaining about portals would keep taking bites and keep burning their mouth. They have got some MAJOR issues going on in their head.
I didn't like the penalty for death in poe1. I played two seasons and leveled up characters to lvl 96 and 98. It's very boring to play carefully avoiding difficult content. There is an HC mode for those who like to play carefully. I thought something would change in the second part, but no. It's a pity, of course, the game is beautiful and it's very interesting to pump up to level 90. But the game for each season will still remain D4. Poe 2 is not a competitor.

Xp loss on death note problem. 1 portal/map no fun and feels bad
I'm a simple man, if I lose progress I get frustrated and quit (for a bit).

I don't want to see my character die, I'm already loosing time and map modifiers (and I will do the empty map as penance). There is no need to effectively delete my save so I go back 2h of playtime.
